NYC Winters and Constipation: What Your Gut Is Telling You
If your digestion feels slower during winter in NYC, you’re not alone. Every February, GI doctors see a rise in constipation, bloating, and abdominal discomfort.
Cold weather changes daily habits more than we realize. We drink less water, move less, eat heavier foods, and deal with more stress. All of this can slow digestion, even in people who don’t usually have issues.
If you have IBS, reflux, hemorrhoids, or a history of constipation, winter symptoms can be harder to manage.
What helps:
• Stay hydrated, even when you’re not thirsty
• Eat fiber-rich foods like vegetables, oats, and fruit
• Add light daily movement, even short walks
• Avoid frequent use of laxatives without medical guidance
Constipation that lasts more than a couple of weeks, keeps returning, or comes with pain or bleeding should be checked.
