Spring sports are officially in full swing! ⚽ But with the return of soccer and field hockey comes a common complaint we see in the clinic: shin guard irritation.

If your child is complaining of red, itchy, or bumpy skin under their protective gear, they are likely experiencing friction dermatitis or a reaction to trapped sweat and bacteria. Samantha Casselman often reminds parents that while protective gear is essential for safety on the field, it can be exceptionally tough on delicate skin.

Here are a few proactive steps to keep your young athlete's skin clear and comfortable this season:
•Wash gear regularly: Wipe down shin guards with a gentle cleanser or antibacterial wipe after every practice and game to prevent bacteria buildup.
•Create a barrier: Have your child wear a clean, moisture-wicking cotton sock directly against the skin, placing the shin guard over it to prevent direct friction.
•Moisturize: Apply a thick, fragrance-free barrier ointment to the shins before gearing up to significantly reduce chafing.
•Wash off quickly: Encourage a warm shower right after playing to remove sweat, dirt, and trapped irritants.

We want to keep your kids focused on their growth and teamwork, not on itchy, uncomfortable skin! If a rash persists, spreads, or becomes painful, early intervention is key to getting them back on the field.

Let us help your child play comfortably all season long. Call our practice at (602) 837-3376 or request an appointment online to schedule an evaluation with Samantha Casselman today! 📞

Q&A time with Samantha Casselman, PA-C

Q: "My 8-year-old is starting to get pimples. Isn't that too young for acne?"

A: This is a question I hear often in my practice. While we typically associate acne with the teenage years, it's becoming more common to see it in younger, school-aged children.
For many, mild breakouts between the ages of 7 and 12 can be a normal sign of the body's early hormonal shifts leading up to puberty. This usually consists of small blackheads or whiteheads on the forehead and nose.

However, it's important to evaluate early if you notice:
•Deeper, painful, or cystic acne.
•Acne that is spreading or worsening quickly.
•Breakouts that are causing scarring or significant distress to your child.

Early and appropriate intervention can prevent more severe acne down the road and protect your child's skin and self-esteem. We can create a gentle, age-appropriate skincare routine that makes a real difference.

☀️🧒👒 Protecting your child's delicate skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do for their long-term health. But sun safety can bring up a lot of questions for parents.

Here are a few key guidelines from our provider, Samantha Casselman, to help keep your little ones safe in the sun:

•When to start: For babies under 6 months, the best sun protection is shade and protective clothing. For children 6 months and older, a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended.
•How much to apply: Be generous! Most people don't use enough. A good rule of thumb is about one ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) to cover the body. Don't forget ears, tops of feet, and the back of the neck.
•Reapplication is key: Sunscreen isn't a one-and-done deal. Reapply at least every two hours, and more frequently if your child has been swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

Establishing these habits early helps create a foundation for a lifetime of healthy skin. If you have questions about the best sunscreen for your child's specific skin needs, we're here to guide you.

✨ Service Spotlight: Intralesional Steroid Injections ✨

Some conditions, like deep, painful cystic acne or the patchy hair loss of alopecia areata, can be particularly challenging for children and teens. When topical treatments aren't enough, we need a more targeted approach. That’s where intralesional steroid injections can make a significant difference.

This treatment involves injecting a small amount of a corticosteroid directly into the affected area.

•For cystic acne: This helps to quickly reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling of large, persistent acne cysts, promoting faster healing and reducing the risk of scarring.
•For alopecia areata: For certain types of hair loss, these injections can help calm the inflammation at the hair follicle, encouraging regrowth in the treated patches.

This is a precise and effective procedure performed in our office by Samantha Casselman. We understand how much these conditions can affect your child's confidence, and we're committed to finding the right solution for their skin and hair health.

Have questions or think this treatment might be right for your child? Let's talk. Call (602) 837-3376 to book a consultation. 📲

Q&A time with Samantha Casselman, PA-C🌸🌼

Question: "Why does my child's eczema seem to flare up every spring?" 🌱

Answer: Spring can be a tricky time for little ones with eczema. As the seasons change, so do environmental triggers. The biggest culprit is often the increase in pollen from blooming trees, grasses, and weeds. 🤧🌳🌿 This can set off an allergic response that makes eczema symptoms worse.

Other factors can also play a role:
•Increased sweating: 💧☀️ Warmer weather means more sweat, which can irritate sensitive, eczema-prone skin.
•More time outdoors: 🏃🌷 Spending more time outside exposes skin to a variety of potential irritants and allergens.

Managing these springtime flare-ups is key to keeping your child comfortable. If you've noticed your child's eczema worsening, we're here to help develop a personalized plan.
