The Appalachian Wedding Chapel & Boutique serves the ceremonial needs of the mid-Atlantic region, offering traditional, spiritual, and secular ceremonies that honor diverse traditions and communities. Located along the beautiful Cacapon River in Capon Bridge, John and Brenda Berry have built a welcoming destination for couples near and far. This year, they will celebrate an incredible milestone — performing their 1,000th wedding.

Their dedication to serving others and creating meaningful experiences reflects the entrepreneurial spirit that makes Hampshire County so special.

The Hampshire County Development Authority is proud to support John and all of this year’s Hampshire on the Horizon participants as they continue shaping their businesses and investing in our community’s future.

Join us at the Hampshire on the Horizon Grand Finale on April 21 at 6PM at the Brannon Building Auditorium (2nd Floor), located on the WVSDB Campus in Romney, to support our local entrepreneurs as they pitch their businesses for a chance to win the $10,000 grand prize.

This evening is designed to bring creatives, planners, venues, photographers, DJs, florists, and industry professionals together in one room — to build relationships that lead to real referrals.

We’re also welcoming North & South Agency, who will be speaking on how wedding vendors can be found through ChatGPT and AI-driven search — and what that means for your visibility moving forward.

I perform Handfastings and weave cords in your chosen colors.

In Ireland the phrase “tying the knot” is associated with an old Irish wedding custom called handfasting. In ancient Ireland, couples didn’t always marry in churches. They stood facing each other, held hands and a druid, poet, or village elder would wrap their wrists with a colorful cord, rope, or ribbon while they spoke their vows. Boom—they were handfasted!

It was often done at festivals like Beltane. The couple would live together for a year and a day as a trial marriage. If it worked out, they made it permanent. If not, they could walk away as friends—no hard feelings, no courts involved. Best part? Under Brehon Law women kept their own property and any kids. Super fair compared to most old-world rules.

Did we say ? Well, Stephen and Giovanna must have heard us because this intrepid, newly-engaged couple came all the way from above Pittsburg to get married yesterday evening at our little mecca of Appalachian love.

No wait to get your marriage license in WV (unlike Pa.), and a beautiful drive through the Appalachian Mountains. What's not to love about that?
