The importance of skin-to-skin contact cannot be overstated. Any gentle, intentional touch from you that your baby receives sets them up for physical and emotional success.

I will be taking a break from social media for a bit. Wishing you all the best in your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum!

One of my biggest regrets after the birth of my son was not having big fat boundaries around my sacred postpartum time. Accept the help that YOU want. Don't accept anything in that time that makes you feel yucky or stressed. Your support system should be set up to take care of and nurture you for as long as you need.

An epidural creates numbness from your bellybutton to your upper legs, and allows you to be awake and alert throughout labor, as well as to feel pressure. Epidurals can be wonderful for pain relief, but also greatly hinder your movement and ability to cope with contraction intensity. Epidurals usually lead to other interventions.

As always, I am a doula! Not a medical professional. Trust your gut, and do your research.

Regarding umedicated, physiological birth, well, there is good news, and bad news.
The bad news: you cannot be “saved”. You can have a midwife, you can have a doula, but it is you alone who must journey to another dimension, to claim your baby. This is spiritual work. We cannot come with you. ⚡️ The good news? You. don’t. need. saving. ⚡️ You see, over time we’ve capitulated to the idea that we shouldn’t need to feel the full extent of the birthing process. Or, that if things get too hard, we’re doing something wrong. We will agree, up front, to a certain amount of sensation, but beyond that it’s too much.
What if you knew up front that you were going to be thoroughly decimated? ⚡️ What if you understood: birth will bring you to your edge, and beyond that edge there is another edge, and then another, and another?
What if, you understood that up front, and gave the universe a handshake and a nod that you’re up for it. ⚡️ This is NOT about martyrdom. This IS about reframing most of what you’ve been led to believe about childbirth.
And what if it is not without divine purpose. ⚡️ It IS big, yes. It is ok to be overwhelmed, and even scared because HOLY S**T, NOTHING has prepared you for this (not even your previous births). It’s ok to not know what to do. And it is ok to do it anyway.
The sensations, and our thoughts that come up because of them, in no way mean anything is wrong.
Surrender.
Over and over, soften your muscles, rest between surges, and do it again. ⚡️ Holy s**t, y’all. We came to this earth, in these bodies, because WE ARE CAPABLE. We were given THE highest honor among humans.
And it is BECAUSE of this POWER and CAPACITY we have been convinced of the spin stories. ⚡️ You can curse, and sweat, and cry, and doubt yourself, even wish for a fu***ng epidural, and you can do. it. anyway.
You will emerge from the storm, a tiny boat on the vast ocean just after an epic storm, intact, forever changed, and weathered by the salt of your sweat and tears.
This. THIS is your .⚡️

Your milk is more than a source of food.

Your milk is healing - full of antibodies to help your little one when they are ill.

Your milk is restorative - a collection of small moments in time when other tasks are paused, and you and your baby exist together for a moment of rest, and relaxation.

Your milk is protective - helping both you and your baby reduce the risk of illness, and disease, both now and in the future.

Your milk is connection - your arms wrapped around your little one, drawing them closer to your heart. Filling them with love, and comfort as milk and time flow on, around you, and through you, sealing your bond.

And yes, your milk is food too - every drop a gift to their growing body. But your milk is not just a source of food, it is food and so much more.

Things To Research Before Having A Baby: Cosleeping / Bed Sharing
There's a reason that you want to snuggle up with your baby... It's biological! As parents, we are wired to want to sleep near our babies. Our responsiveness to our babies throughout the night leads to better sleep later on in life. As long as it is done safely, cosleeping is a wonderful option for bonding with your baby.

Vitamin K is a common shot given to newborns in hospitals in the United States. Since minimal amounts of vitamin K are passed through breastmilk, this supplementation ensures that babies' blood will be able to clot if necessary. The vitamin K shot can be declined if desired.

Things To Research Before Having A Baby: IVs
IVs are used to get a substance, like fluid or medication, into the body quickly and efficiently. During labor, when an IV used, it is most often used to administer fluid or pain relieving medications. An IV must be placed before an epidural is given or any surgery is performed. IVs usually lead to other interventions. You can refuse an IV.

If your baby is born male, your care provider will likely ask if you are planning on having him circumcised. Circumcision is a common procedure for newborns in the United States. However, circumcision is not necessary for the health and wellbeing of your baby. There are no major short or long-term health concerns for a baby who is kept whole.

Things To Research Before Having A Baby: Family Planning
Family planning after the birth of your baby should be discussed between you and your partner as soon as possible. Breastfeeding does not always prevent pregnancies.
Whether your personal options include barrier methods, fertility awareness methods, short or long-acting hormonal methods, or contraceptive methods, they warrant a thorough discussion with your care provider and your partner.

Breastfeeding is most often the primary goal for feeding your baby. However, due to various circumstances, breastfeeding isn't always possible. For this reason, learning about the different formula options and methods of feeding is a useful tool for those "just in case" situations, even if you plan on breastfeeding.
