The holidays can be wonderful in many ways, but for those with religious trauma, they can also be really challenging.
There is a lot of expectation around the holidays to engage in family traditions, & if those traditions are connected to religious practices that are no longer in alignment with someone’s worldview, those familiar traditions may also now feel foreign, uncomfortable, or even triggering. If traditions are bound up with rigidity, they can become costly to members of the group who are trying to uphold them.
Ultimately, traditions have to start somewhere; they have not always existed. Things have been added or adapted to “the way we’ve always done it” and it’s gotten better. There can be grief in releasing or adapting traditions, but that does not mean that there can’t be something beautiful awaiting in a new chapter.
So if you’re looking at the holidays in the weeks ahead, remember – you are allowed to change holiday traditions or create new ones! You can invite others to join you in your new traditions, or you can opt out of an old tradition and protect your peace as you engage with your new option.
If you’re thinking “I hope ABC doesn’t happen while I’m there” or “Ugh I always hate having to deal with XYZ”, then those are clues to places where you may want to offer some creative suggestions on a fresh way to approach things, or perhaps set a boundary. If your loved ones aren’t open to those changes, you are allowed to adapt your participation in the original traditions.
So yes -
•You are allowed to completely opt out this year.
•You are allowed to shorten your visit.
•You are allowed to get a hotel/ not stay in the same house.
•You are allowed to attend certain festivities and then go do your own thing for awhile before you circle back.
You do not have to put yourself under intense emotional stress in order to make everyone else happy; you can offer care to them while also showing care for your own needs.
