As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist specializing in digestive health, I help people who have either been diagnosed with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, gastroparesis, and others (or who are experiencing digestive symptoms with no apparent cause) find relief. I am very good at helping patients identify their food sensitivities and intolerances, and build a diet plan consisting of the very best foods they can eat for their digestive and overall health. The results of eating the right foods for your body will amaze you! Nutrition consultations are provided in person at my Phoenix and Mesa offices, over the phone, or via Skype. I also help people who may not necessarily have digestive-related concerns, but who want to be healthier or address other symptoms. I teach patients how to tune into their body and use mindfulness to guide their eating and lifestyle habits. I also provide nutrition education and help to clarify the mixed messages that are out there regarding nutrition and various diets. These services are provided in-person via individual consultation, over the phone, or online. Click the “Refine” tab to learn more about my online nutrition and lifestyle coaching program.

If your gut is constantly in “fight or flight,” no supplement or diet will fix it.

That’s because your nervous system and gut are always talking and most of those messages actually travel from your body to your brain.

In this episode of The Gut Health Dialogues, I sit down with Niki D’Agostino to talk about how to break that chronic stress loop, starting with one simple exercise you can do anywhere:
the Vu Breath.

This low, vibrational breath helps send safety signals from your gut back up to your brain, interrupting the stress pattern that keeps your body from digesting, resting, and healing.

Tune into Episode 76: Nervous System Healing for Gut & Chronic Illness with Niki D’Agostino to learn:
✨ How everyday stress impacts digestion and healing
✨ Why the vagus nerve is your gut’s secret communication line
✨ And how to use the Vu breath to regulate your system in real time

Did you know that even everyday stress can rewire your nervous system and keep your gut from healing?

Because the truth is, if you’ve been waking up and running on stress for years, your nervous system has learned that pattern.

And a nervous system stuck in stress?
🚫 Can’t digest properly
🚫 Can’t heal
🚫 Can’t fully rest, no matter how “healthy” your routine looks

In this episode of The Gut Health Dialogues, I’m joined by Niki D’Agostino to talk about:
✨ How chronic stress dysregulates the nervous system
✨ Why this blocks gut healing + immune repair
✨ And simple ways to bring your body back to safety and trust

Ever feel like your body is holding onto more than just stress?

Sometimes it’s not the event itself that creates trauma - it’s how our nervous system responds to it. That public embarrassment, that heartbreak, or even the stress you can’t shake… it can keep your body stuck in survival mode. 😣

When your nervous system is stuck, stress hormones stay in overdrive, your gut feels it, and chronic health issues can follow.

In this episode of The Gut Health Dialogues, Niki D’Agostino breaks down how nervous system healing can support your gut and overall wellness, because it’s not just your mind, it’s your body too.

We talk a lot about feeling safe emotionally, but what about feeling safe physically?

Neuroplasticity coach Niki D’Agostino said something on this week’s episode about healing, and it’s stuck in my mind since:

She said, “If we don’t feel safe, our cells stay stuck in protection mode.”

That means your body isn’t just stressed, it’s literally diverting energy away from healing.
When your cells are focused on survival, digestion slows down, detox pathways back up, and nutrient absorption drops.

Your gut can’t heal if your body doesn’t feel safe enough to do it.

In this episode, we unpack what that actually means and how to start creating that sense of safety so your body can move from protecting to thriving.

Did you know your gut listens to your nervous system before it listens to your diet? 👀

In my latest podcast episode, I sat down with Neuroplasticity Coach Niki D’Agostino to explore how chronic stress, subconscious trauma, and limbic system impairment block true recovery and show you how to begin rewiring your body’s stress response for real healing.

If your digestion feels stuck, your energy is low, or stress keeps triggering flares, this episode will help you reconnect the brain-gut loop and bring your system back to calm.

Want to expand your diet without triggering a flare? Start small — really small.

One of my favorite gut-strengthening hacks is the Veggie Mash Strategy. By blending 10–15 different veggies into tiny ice-cube portions, you feed your microbiome with diversity without overwhelming your gut.

Over time, this builds resilience and tolerance, so you can enjoy more foods without fear & flare 🙌

P.S. And if you want to fully understand why healthy foods sometimes backfire during a flare, don’t miss the full episode #75 : “Why Healthy Foods Might can trigger IBS and Bloating — and What to Eat Instead During a Flare.” https://open.spotify.com/episode/2KFucMGnOKkJdjrp4shT7m?si=af5d301a77124d5a

When your gut is in the middle of a flare, it’s easy to feel trapped — like everything you eat is going to make symptoms worse. But the truth is, you can eat in a way that soothes your gut, reduces stress on digestion, and helps you feel more in control again.

This is why having a clear plan for flare-friendly foods is so important. I put together a Bland Diet Foods List so you don’t have to guess. It’s free, and it’ll help you know exactly what to eat when your gut feels like it’s at war with you. Click here for the guide: https://alyssa-simpson.mykajabi.com/blanddietfoodlist

It’s not just what you eat that matters, it’s the state of your gut when you eat it. Many people with IBS or sensitive digestion blame themselves for not tolerating healthy foods — but the real issue often lies in gut inflammation, microbiome imbalance, or timing of what you eat.

That’s why some foods feel fine one week and impossible the next. It’s not about cutting out all the “healthy” stuff forever, it’s about knowing when your gut is ready to handle them and what to swap in during a flare.

We dive into all of this (plus which foods to lean on when your gut feels inflamed) in Episode 75 of The Gut Health Dialogues Podcast: “Why Healthy Foods Might Trigger IBS and Bloating and What to Eat Instead During a Flare.” https://open.spotify.com/episode/2KFucMGnOKkJdjrp4shT7m?si=af5d301a77124d5a

How to heal your gut to handle healthy foods?

The truth is “healthy” doesn’t always mean “healing.” Your gut plays by a different set of rules when it’s inflamed or in flare mode.

In Episode 75 of The Gut Health Dialogues Podcast, I dig into why the foods you’ve been told are good for you might actually backfire during IBS flare-ups and what to eat instead so you can calm symptoms and finally feel relief.

Did you know inflammation is like the common cold of chronic illnesses and is involved in about 70% of chronic health issues?

Once you learn how to bring the inflammation down, your body stops reacting to everything.

Wanna know how to bring down the inflammation in your gut?
Start with the right foods.

I put together a simple Anti-Inflammatory Foods List (Click the link to grab it). These are the same foods I recommend to clients when their digestion feels stuck, bloated, or overly reactive. https://alyssa-simpson.mykajabi.com/anti-inflammatory-food-list-pdf

And if you’ve ever felt like “healthy” foods are actually making you feel worse… you’re not crazy. In Episode 75 of The Gut Health Dialogues Podcast, we break down why fiber-rich veggies, lentils, and whole grains can trigger IBS and bloating during a flare and what to eat instead. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2KFucMGnOKkJdjrp4shT7m?si=af5d301a77124d5a

You’ve been told POTS is an autonomic nervous system disorder. But what if that’s not the real problem?

In Episode 74 of the Gut Health Dialogues Podcast, Dr. Diana Driscoll reveals the missing piece: a hidden inflammatory state that damages blood vessels, disrupts vagus nerve signaling, and triggers the symptoms so many patients struggle with—fast heart rate, gut dysfunction, brain fog, and more.

This conversation changes how we think about POTS, vagus nerve dysfunction, EDS, and chronic gut issues. If you’ve been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told “it’s just anxiety,” you need to hear this.
