Blackbox Healthcare Solutions is heading to the BRI Network Discharge Planning and Capacity Management Summit next week.

Discharge delays remain one of the most costly and preventable challenges in healthcare today, impacting patient flow, outcomes, and overall system efficiency.

We are looking forward to connecting with leaders who are rethinking discharge as a proactive, day-one strategy, not a last-minute task.

If you will be there, let’s connect. We would love to share how we are helping organizations simplify care coordination and improve access across the continuum.

Finishing our second leg of our week on the road in Jekyll Island at the Emergency Management Association of Georgia conference has reinforced something we have believed from the beginning.

The REACH Program is not just about improving access to care for rural communities and patients who are too often left behind. It is also a critical piece of the future of emergency response.

When seconds matter and systems are overwhelmed, coordination is everything.

A centralized coordination center with real time visibility into bed availability, service capacity, and regional resources creates the kind of situational awareness that emergency management teams need during mass casualty incidents and large scale events. It allows for faster decisions, better resource allocation, and ultimately better outcomes for patients.

At Arizona REACH, we are building more than a referral coordination system. We are building infrastructure that can support both everyday care and extraordinary moments of crisis.

In the weeks and months ahead, we will continue to expand our emergency preparedness capabilities and strengthen our partnerships to ensure we are ready when it matters most.

Are you a part of your local, state, or federal emergency management? Let’s talk!

From nursing leadership to emergency management without missing a beat.

After wrapping up the AONL Conference, we’re sending Charley Larsen & Valentino Shepard straight to Jekyll Island, Georgia for the Georgia Emergency Management Summit. As the AZ REACH Program continues to grow, our focus is expanding beyond coordination into how we support communities during times of crisis.

We are here to listen, learn, and collaborate with partners across the country, while sharing how Arizona is building a more connected, responsive system of care when it matters most.

“What has been most impactful since the AZ REACH Program began is the difference we all know that it has made for patients, especially those seeking care in emergency departments,” said Charley Larsen, AZ REACH executive director. “By taking the administrative load that once pulled clinicians away from the bedside, REACH helps ensure patients receive more attentive, uninterrupted care during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives..."

Yesterday, the Arizona House Health & Human Services Committee voted 11–1 to advance HB2180, supporting continued funding for the AZ REACH program.

At Blackbox Healthcare Solutions, we are proud to support AZ REACH and the mission of strengthening statewide coordination so patients can access the right level of care when and where it is needed.

We are grateful for the thoughtful, bipartisan engagement from committee members and for the frontline clinical leaders who shared real world perspectives during testimony. Their voices reinforce why coordinated transfer infrastructure matters, especially for rural, tribal, and small hospitals across Arizona.

This vote reflects confidence in a model that has proven its value and underscores our responsibility to continue listening, collaborating, and improving alongside hospitals, clinicians, and state leaders.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in moving this important work forward.

REACH Math: 3 + 20,000 = 1

3 years + 20,000 patient referrals = 1 mission

Three years ago, REACH was launched with a simple but bold goal: Make access to care easier for patients across Arizona. Today, we’re humbled to share that we’ve officially crossed 20,000 patient referrals coordinated through the program.

It’s basketball season… did you know? The capacity of the Phoenix Suns Arena, Mortgage Matchup Center is between 18,000 and 20,000 people? Let that sink in; an entire NBA Arena worth of patients seeking help. That number represents real people, real access, and real coordination made possible by an incredible network of partners and frontline teams.

Thank you to everyone who believed in this model and continues to show up for patients every day! 🫶

Today, all of healthcare, and especially nursing family, mourns the devastating loss of Dr. Sammie Mosier, DHA, MBA, BSN, NE-BC, CMSRN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive for HCA Healthcare.

Sammie was an extraordinary leader, a steadfast advocate for nurses, and a deeply compassionate human being. Her influence extended far beyond her role, shaping healthcare culture, elevating the nursing profession, and setting a standard for leadership grounded in integrity, humility, and purpose. She led with clarity, courage, and heart, leaving an enduring legacy across our industry.

We extend our deepest condolences to Sammie’s family, loved ones, and the entire HCA Healthcare community. Our thoughts are with all who are grieving this profound loss. May her memory bring comfort, and may the impact of her leadership continue to inspire caregivers and leaders for years to come.

💡 Honored to be featured by WRAP-EM.

The Western Regional Alliance for Pediatric Emergency Management recently highlighted a webinar we hosted together, showcasing how the Arizona REACH Program is transforming statewide patient movement in real time.

From faster placements to fairer access, REACH continues to show what’s possible when coordination, equity, and innovation come together.

We’re grateful to WRAP-EM for the opportunity to share the model, the outcomes, and the lessons learned after nearly 20,000 patient transfer requests statewide.

If you missed the feature, you can see it here:

Statewide systems get better when we collaborate and learn from each other one shared playbook at a time. If you want to connect, compare notes, or explore how we can support similar work in your region, REACH out (pun intended 😁). We’d love to collaborate!

Happy National Rural Health Day!

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and heartbeat of rural communities.

At Blackbox Healthcare Solutions, we have the privilege of supporting the hospitals and clinicians who care for millions of Americans in regions where distance, limited resources, and workforce shortages make every decision matter even more.

Our REACH program was built for days like today, and for every day that a rural patient needs timely access, clear pathways, and a team behind the scenes working to remove delays.

To every rural provider, hospital leader, EMS crew, nurse, physician, health worker, and community partner: Thank you. Your work is vital, and we’re honored to stand with you.

DYK: Almost 1 in 10 rural hospital encounters ends in a transfer. That stat hits different when you’ve stood in those hallways and watched it happen.

A transfer isn’t just a chart, a phone call, or an ambulance ride. It’s a family scrambling to figure out who will drive three hours. It’s a parent riding up front while their child heads to another hospital alone. It’s a small-town team doing everything they can with limited beds, limited specialists, and a whole lot of heart.

Rural hospitals aren’t transferring because they want to, they’re transferring because they have to.

As we get closer to National Rural Health Day, this is exactly why our work matters. Better coordination. Faster pathways. Getting people where they need to be without losing time or hope.

This is why our REACH program exists.

Abstract The purpose was to examine factors associated with transfers and readmissions among Medicare patients initially presenting at rural facilities. Data from the 2013 Medicare Claims file were used to identify fee-for-service patients with a hospital admission (n = 298,783) or an emergency ...
