Being safe is not the same as feeling safe.
Children from hard places—or with neurodevelopmental differences—may struggle to feel secure, even when caregivers provide physical safety. Their behaviors may seem confusing or challenging, but they are often fear responses rooted in past experiences or brain processing.
Caregivers can help children increase felt safety through attunement, presence, co-regulation, and validation. It takes patience, consistency, and love, but it’s a path to healing!
