Charlie says that as a retiree, every day is Saturday, so he gives as much time as he can, and Southwest Human Development is better for it.
In this Volunteer Spotlight, Charlie shares what it has been like volunteering with Southwest Human Development and the many ways he helps out, from driving and sorting to jumping in wherever he is needed. His story is a great reminder that volunteering does not have to look just one way. It can be simple, hands-on, flexible, and incredibly meaningful.

Thank you, Arizona Central Credit Union

We’re deeply grateful to Arizona Central Credit Union for their generous support of our Grow a Reader campaign and their genuine commitment to early literacy. As part of our appreciation, we were honored to welcome their team to tour our Educare Campus and spend time reading with our students.

A special thank-you to Brian Lee, Sarah Hancotte, and Mindy Fellows, whose visit brought joy to our students and made the day truly special for everyone involved.
Support like this helps nurture a love of reading and creates lasting impact for Arizona’s youngest learners.

AZ Gives Day is today.

Every child deserves a strong start, to be seen, supported, and surrounded by care from the very beginning.

At Southwest Human Development, that’s what we work toward every day: helping Arizona’s youngest children and their families build brighter, more hopeful futures through early literacy, mental health support, and family services.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make a difference close to home, today is a beautiful day to do it. And as an Arizona taxpayer, your gift can also qualify for a dollar‑for‑dollar state tax credit, meaning your generosity goes even further.
Give with heart. Give with impact.

Support Arizona’s kids today.

Literacy Month may be ending, but the impact of reading lasts a lifetime.

Parents, when you read with your child, you’re doing more than sharing a story. You’re building language, imagination, and a love of learning that shapes their future. Even 10–15 minutes a day helps your child grow stronger skills one page at a time.

That’s something the Castaneda family understands deeply. At our recent Playfest event, they painted a Little Free Library as a family and now they’re placing it in front of their home to share their love of reading with neighbors near and far. It’s a beautiful reminder that literacy doesn’t stop at the classroom door, it grows through everyday moments and community connections.

Explore early literacy resources at swhd.org and find simple ways to make reading part of your family’s daily routine.

One book. One conversation. One big impact.

Hear from Kaitlin Parr on how Southwest Human Development is helping families across the Valley build strong literacy foundations from the start.

There’s something special about story time, especially when it’s shared with caring community members.
A big thank you to Epsilon Sigma Alpha for spending time at Educare reading with our children and helping support our Grow a Reader campaign. Moments like these do more than make story time fun, they help spark imagination, build early literacy skills, and create meaningful connections that children will remember.
