šŸŒāœØ This World Health Day, let's prioritize the mental health of dyslexic students! So many students with dyslexia have academic trauma that can significantly impact their mental health and their future desire to learn. We can prevent this academic trauma by catching students early, supporting their strengths, empowering their knowledge of dyslexia, and focusing on their overall academic growth instead of grades and percentages. Your child's mental health is more important than their grades. If school and academics are destroying your child's mental health, reach out to our wonderful dyslexic community for help and resources. 🌟

Keeping track of your child’s IEP data is absolutely critical. Do not rely on the school to do this. Here are our top tips for parents:

1. Quantitative data is often better and more useful than qualitative data. If you do not have quantitative data, ask for it.
2. Progress monitoring is customized but a minimum of quarterly data collection is recommended.
3. Keep a running line graph of all the data for every goal with a dot or some icon to show goal level. A picture is often worth a thousand words.
4. Keep track of IEP minutes and ask for an account if you feel your child has not received all their minutes.

Do not support homework that is either unhelpful or detrimental (e.g. writing spelling words numerous times). Teach your child to accept the consequences of not doing the task, and then schedule a 504 or IEP review meeting to make sure your child’s team understands why such tasks will not be done. Not all homework is beneficial, and some homework is detrimental not only to your child’s learning but also to their self-esteem.
