Recovery Retreat

Can I tell you a secret? It’s not a secret. Our churches are filled with people just like you. People who are in recovery from substance abuse, po*******hy addiction, and mental illness.

But even though you are not alone, you might be feeling like you are the only one. In fact, you might have even sought answers and supports outside the church. Why? Because it feels like you just can’t bring it up. Or you tried to bring it up and the result was more pain, misunderstanding, and isolation.

Although Alcoholics Anonymous and Celebrate Recovery meetings are available in most parts of the country, we have found that many in the WELS feel uncomfortable in both programs for reasons of fellowship and doctrine. This puts WELS members in the difficult position of choosing between the support and understanding found in these recovery meetings, and the fellowship and doctrinal soundness found WELS churches.

If any of this is making sense to you, don’t miss this three-day, spiritual retreat for those in recovery. This retreat is for you. We have two goals for the retreat:

1) Provide a theologically-sound spiritual experience for WELS members who are a) in substance abuse or mental health recovery, b) have a loved-one with in recovery, or c) struggle with any habitual sin.

2) Equip members to develop and improve recovery ministries in their home churches.

The retreat is open to WELS members from across the country. We’ll have informational breakout sessions, Resilient Law and Gospel Recovery meetings, small-group prayer and worship sessions, and congregant meals and worship.

In the informational breakout sessions, participants you’ll learn distinctly Lutheran approaches to recovery, along with practical advice about starting and maintaining recovery groups.

In the Resilient Law and Gospel recovery meetings, participants will experience a Christ-exalting recovery meeting. And you will be able to discuss our risen Lord and his work in your life freely and openly. There will be no need to stifle yourself or watch your words to avoid offending others. We know your Jesus. We love him, too.

In the small group prayer and worship sessions, participants will boldly approach the throne of mercy, asking God for personal and congregational healing.

Fellowship and further spiritual growth will take place in our congregant meals and worship.
