The Ivy Center hosted a live brain surgery viewing event for Barrow Neurological Foundation donors, members of the Women’s Board, and the Board of Trustees. Guests received an introduction from Dr. Papadopoulos and observed a brain tumor removal surgery performed by Dr. Sanai. The event offered a unique opportunity for our supporters to see firsthand the dedication and innovation driving progress in brain tumor care.

Understanding Meningiomas

Meningiomas are 'primary' brain tumors that derive from the meninges, the protective lining of the brain. While most patients with a meningioma will have a tumor at only one site, it is possible to have several tumors growing simultaneously in different parts of the brain. These tumors can directly infiltrate the brain tissue, but their symptoms are most often due to their mass effect on the brain.

Did you know? Grade I meningiomas are the most common type and is generally treated with surgery alone.

Metastatic Brain Tumors

Unlike primary brain tumors (which start in the brain), metastatic brain tumors, or 'secondary' brain tumors, originate from cancer in another part of the body and spread to the brain. The most common sources of brain metastases are cancers from the lung, breast, skin, kidney, and colon.

These tumors are usually treated with surgery that is sometimes followed by radiation or stereotactic radiosurgery.

Did you know? Metastatic tumors are the most common brain tumor. Up to 40 percent of systemic cancer patients develop brain metastases.

The Ivy Center remains dedicated to advancing brain tumor treatment. Learn more: https://bar.rw/47MBGL4

Understanding Gliomas

Gliomas are primary brain tumors that originate from the brain tissue itself. This tissue is called "gila," and it helps to keep the neurons in place and functioning well. Common subtypes include astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, glioblastoma, and gliosarcoma.

All gliomas are graded based on World Health Organization (WHO) criteria: Grade I to IV. Grades I, II, and III gliomas are less aggressive and often seen in younger populations, yet can still recur and defy conventional therapies. Grade IV gliomas (known as glioblastomas or gliosarcomas) are the most common primary brain cancer in adults.

Did you know? All Glioblastomas are Gliomas, but not all Gliomas are Glioblastomas.

The Ivy Center specializes in researching and treating these complex tumors. Learn more: https://bar.rw/4qv41x3
