1. If everyone promoting a skincare brand is young and/or famous, that means the brand is relying on that individual’s beauty rather than a product’s results.

2. The way a skincare product smells is one of the worst ways to decide what to put on your face. Fragrance and irritation often go hand in hand.

3. The percentage of acid in a product is less important than the pH of it. So many brands are out here claiming to have acids but the pH has been neutralized rendering it effectively inactive (AKA it won’t do anything special). Lower pH products will tingle.

4. Retinol is not the same as prescription retinoids (tretinoin, etc.) and doesn’t do much of anything. If someone claims you NEED retinol in your routine that’s a red flag.

5. The longer an ingredient has been used, the less patentable it is, and the less profit brands can make. These large beauty brands tend to prioritize profitability over results for consumers. So when you hear about a “brand new” “miracle” ingredient, be cautious.
