Irlen Syndrome Specialist Irlen Specialist Irlen Screening

What happens when I come for testing? The assessment process is separated into two testing sessions.

The first session is called the Screening. You will do various perceptual tasks with a certified Irlen Screener or Diagnostician. The testing creates an awareness of the various distortions you are experiencing when reading, educates as to what a page should be like, and determines if your symptoms are slight, moderate or severe. At this first session, we establish the color of the overlay (plastic sheet) which will provide the greatest benefit for reading. You will be given this overlay to take home to use when reading. You will be able to see for yourself immediate changes and improvement when reading in one or more of the following skills

Reading rate • Flow and fluency
• Comfort • Tracking
• Comprehension • Sight vocabulary
• Sustained attention • Ability to skim or speed read
• Error rate
For those that the Irlen Colored Overlays improve reading, they go on for the second session, Tint Assessment. During the tint assessment, you work with different colored lenses to create your own unique color. This color filters out your offending wave lengths of light. Each person ends up with their own unique color. By filtering only certain wave lengths of light, reading, attention, light sensitivity, headaches and other physical symptoms improve or disappear.

A recent study indicates a significant overlap between Irlen Syndrome and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In one study, approximately 50% of participants diagnosed with both Irlen Syndrome and ADHD no longer met the diagnostic criteria for an attention deficit disorder after beginning to use Irlen Spectral Filters. Addressing the underlying visual processing difficulties associated with Irlen Syndrome effectively resolved the attention-related symptoms previously attributed to ADHD, suggesting a potential pattern of misdiagnosis in cases where visual processing deficits are present (BarNir, Shaked, Elad, & Tosta, 2023).

Additionally, a separate study found that 64% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD reported visual sensory sensitivities, including discomfort with lighting, reading difficulties, atypical visual perceptions, and challenges processing visually complex environments (Wada, Hayashi, Seino, Ishii, Nawa, & Nishimaki, 2023). These findings underscore the importance of assessing visual processing factors when evaluating attentional and sensory regulation difficulties.

The last 7 years I have seen clients respond to the use of color to change how to brain functions in miraculous ways being able to read comfortably with the right color overlay and changing their phone and and screen color, etc. Once they get their spectrum filters worn as glasses, their whole world changes clumsiness, migraines, attention, focus, and even hunger pains because the brain uses so much glucose in trying to focus and concentrate when they can’t process visual information.

Do you come home from work tired and exhausted?
Do you get headaches at work regularly?
Are your eyes often tired, watery or even dry? 😵‍💫

You may have the visual processing difficulty known as Irlen Syndrome. It is nothing to do with eyesight but is how the brain processes the visual information and light that enters the eyes. The brain has to work too hard to overcome the overload and overstimulation of the visual cortex, thus leading to sore eyes, fatigue and persistent headaches. 🤯
Filtering the light that enters the eyes calms the brain and the visual cortex allowing it to function more efficiently and reducing these physical symptoms.

This is why I do what I do as a certified Irlen senior screener for the last 7 years. I have seen those with learning difficulties, autism, brain, injury, ADHD, and people many people without any diagnosis that have always struggled with light sensitivity, migraines, attention, and concentration and or reading

SOME people need glasses to see clearly.

OTHERS need Irlen filters to think, feel, and function clearly.

Why??

When someone has Irlen Syndrome it means their brain is overstimulated by light and color, it’s not just a “bad mood” or “being sensitive.”

🧠 It can shut down focus
😣 Trigger headaches or migraines
😤 Amp up irritability
😵‍💫 Leave you feeling totally drained

Take a self-test to see if Irlen custom-colored filters could be the missing puzzle piece.
