✨ A Patient’s EDS Journey Can Often Look Like This. When a patient tells a physician or other provider that they think they might have EDS, many times they are told that’s probably not the case simply because that’s a very uncommon condition to have. The larger problem leading to difficulties in diagnosis is that so many different things can happen with EDS and they can resemble other more common conditions.

⚕️ So, if you’re a specialist in one condition, you’re going to tend to focus on what you specialize in and focus on some set of symptoms and maybe underappreciate other symptoms. Similar to the old parable talking about several blind men who were trying to determine what an elephant was like just based on touching it. So, based on what part of the elephant they happen to touch, they decided this is what an elephant was.

🩻 If we substitute these literal structures of the elephant and talk about the features of EDS, you can see that based on the symptoms that someone focuses on or what their specialty is, they may decide the patient has one thing and not see the larger picture. EDS has many faces and can present in many ways and it can make it difficult to diagnose.

🩺 At the Center, we are dedicated to the care of patients with complex neurological problems which include Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. We provide diagnostics and treatment to help patients live full and active lives despite this challenging disorder.

🧬 Why Do Mast Cells Matter in MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome)?

Mast cells are part of your immune system and they’re supposed to protect you. But in MCAS, they go a little haywire…

Instead of reacting to real threats, they release chemicals (like histamine) too easily, causing symptoms all over your body like:
🔷 Flushing or hives
🔷 Gut issues
🔷 Brain fog
🔷 Shortness of breath
🔷 Dizziness

The problem isn’t how many mast cells you have, it’s how they’re acting. Overreactive mast cells = chronic symptoms that can be hard to pin down.

🎯 Treating MCAS means calming down those mast cells and identifying what’s triggering them.

🤯 Did You Know? ⁉️ About 50% of patients with EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) can touch the tip of the nose with their tongue. 🦓 In medical terms it’s called Gorlin’s sign. 🩺 It’s estimated that only 10% of the general population can do this.

Which one are you?! 🔎💬
🔷 A. Can touch my nose

🧠 Chiari Malformation (CM) is a condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. It causes structural defects in the base of the skull and cerebellum. When a part of the cerebellum extends below the foramen magnum and into the upper spinal canal, it is referred to as a Chiari Malformation. ❤️‍🩹

🩺 Symptoms can include headache, balance problems, and troubles with vision and swallowing. In most patients, symptoms can be managed with medications, but sometimes surgery is needed. 💊

⚕️At the Center, Dr. Saperstein and his team will make an assessment of your Chiari Malformation and guide you through the most appropriate and effective treatment for your condition.

✨ Cranial Cervical Instability (CCI) happens when the ligaments supporting your head and neck weaken or get damaged, causing everything from chronic headaches and neck pain to vertigo and even cognitive challenges. 🧠💫 Often linked to conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, trauma, or spine changes, CCI can be treated with physical therapy, medication, or in severe cases, surgery.

🩺 Dr. Saperstein has over 20 years of experience diagnosing and treating CCI, using medical imaging to find the best approach for each patient.

Physical Therapy Recommendations for EDS & HSD Presented by Dr. David Saperstein.

⚠ Physical Therapy for EDS and HSD isn’t one-size-fits-all. Effective physical therapy for EDS and HSD requires a specialized understanding from therapists who understand their unique connective tissue challenges.

✨ Dr. David Saperstein explains why specialized knowledge matters, and how the wrong approach can sometimes make symptoms worse instead of better.

If you have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder, your PT should understand joint instability, proprioception, and connective tissue fragility before creating your treatment plan.

💡 Watch now to learn what to look for in a physical therapist and why it can make all the difference.

🔍 Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) are a group of conditions related to joint hypermobility, joint dislocations/subluxations, musculoskeletal injuries, and pain in the absence of a diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or other heritable disorder of connective tissue, or other primary reason for joint instability.

There are four main types of HSD which are classified based on which joints are affected and the associated symptoms.
🔹 Generalized HSD (G-HSD) – affects multiple joints throughout the body
🔹 Peripheral HSD (P-HSD) – limited to hands and feet
🔹 Localized HSD (L-HSD) – only one or a few joints are affected
🔹 Historical HSD (H-HSD) – past hypermobility that lessens over time but symptoms persist

Have you heard of Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (IST)? 💓

Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia is pronounced: [i-ne'-pro-pre-et | 'si-nes | ta-ki-'kar-de-a]
IST is not a form of orthostatic intolerance, meaning an elevated heart rate and symptoms aren’t tied to position. Instead, even minimal exertion can cause the heart rate to rise excessively.

💙 Understanding these distinctions can help patients and providers recognize the difference between IST and other forms of dysautonomia.

Center for Complex Neurology

We provide expert diagnosis and treatment of selected diseases, to include ALS, CIDP, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, (EDS), GBS, Neuropathy, Myositis, Muscular Dystrophy, Myasthenia Gravis, POTS & other dysautonomias. Dr. Saperstein has over 20 years of experience diagnosing, treating and researching these conditions.

Why did I create the Center for Complex Neurology?

Over the last 22 years I have been practicing medicine I have done so in a variety of settings: on staff at a university medical center, in private practice, as part of a health care system, and even in the U.S. military (Air Force). Each system had it pluses and minuses. But all forms of medical practice have come under strain in recent years from unprecedented changes in the health care system.
