What is the Right Imaging for Diagnosing CCI, Presented by Dr. David Saperstein.

Cranial Cervical Instability or CCI, is a medical condition that occurs when the ligaments and connective tissues that support the head and neck become weakened or damaged. This can lead to excessive movement between the skull and the upper cervical spine, causing a variety of symptoms such as chronic headaches, neck pain, vertigo, and even cognitive impairment.

CCI is often seen in individuals with conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome but can also be caused by trauma or degenerative changes in the spine. Treatment for CCI may include physical therapy, medication, or in severe cases, surgery.

🌟 What is Hypovolemic POTS? 🌟

Hypovolemic POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) is a subtype of POTS characterized by low blood volume (hypovolemia), which affects the body’s ability to regulate blood flow and pressure. This condition leads to insufficient blood returning to the heart when standing, causing a rapid heart rate (tachycardia) to compensate. Theses symptoms can impact a person's daily life.

POTS is a form of Dysautonomia. 🩺 POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.

We do not know exactly what causes POTS, it may come on suddenly after a viral illness, pregnancy, surgery, or an injury. Many times there is no trigger.

Did you know the average POTS patient waits over 4 years for a diagnosis and sees more than 7 doctors before finally getting answers? 🤯

This delay happens because most doctors aren’t trained to diagnose and treat autonomic disorders in medical school and it takes specialized training.

POTS isn’t rare; it’s just rarely recognized. 💙

💬 How long did it take for you to get diagnosed? 🤔

Does your head feel too heavy for your neck? 🧠⚖️

For some people with EDS or hypermobility, that feeling isn’t just muscle tension. It can be related to Cranial Cervical Instability CCI, a condition where the skull and upper cervical spine do not stay properly aligned.

When the ligaments that stabilize this area are too loose or injured, it may place stress on important structures like the brainstem, spinal cord, and surrounding nerves.

Because the head is relatively heavy and sits on the most mobile part of the spine, even small alignment changes can contribute to symptoms.

Not everyone with neck pain has CCI. But in people with connective tissue disorders, hypermobility, or a history of neck injury, it may be considered as part of a broader clinical evaluation.

MAST CELLS might be tiny… but their impact on how you feel can be HUGE.

When mast cells release histamine and other chemicals in response to triggers, it can lead to symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, flushing, and more.

Common triggers can include:
🍽️ Certain foods
🌿 Environmental exposures
🌡️ Temperature changes
😣 Stress
🦠 Infections

For many patients, these reactions are real, physical, and often misunderstood.

If you’ve ever been told “everything looks normal” but you still don’t feel well, mast cell activation could be part of the picture.

🔥 Did you know? Some POTS symptoms can be relieved simply by lying down! 🛏️⬇️ This helps restore normal blood flow to the brain and organs, making it easier to function.

💙 POTS makes standing, moving, and even everyday activities a challenge due to improper blood flow. That’s why rest isn’t laziness, it’s necessary!

✨ Dysautonomia can often cause chronic pain from headaches and migraines, “coat hanger” pain in the neck, chest pain, muscle and joint pain, burning nerve pain on the skin to abdominal pain, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞!

🩺 For some, symptoms are mild and manageable. For others, they can be deeply disabling, impacting daily tasks, independence, and quality of life. And in rare cases, dysautonomia can become life-threatening.

Every patient’s experience is real, valid, and deserving of understanding and support. Awareness is the first step toward better care, better research, and better outcomes for this community.

🧠 Chiari Malformation (CM) is a condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. It causes structural defects in the base of the skull and cerebellum. When a part of the cerebellum extends below the foramen magnum and into the upper spinal canal, it is referred to as a Chiari Malformation. ❤️‍🩹

🩺 Symptoms can include headache, balance problems, and troubles with vision and swallowing. In most patients, symptoms can be managed with medications, but sometimes surgery is needed. 💊

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS) & Genetic Testing Presented by Dr. David Saperstein.

𝐯𝐄𝐃𝐒 (𝐕𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬-𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞) is an uncommon, dominantly inherited, genetic connective tissue disorder. vEDS is rare and patients usually have a very characteristic appearance to their face and skin (skin is very translucent and veins are very prominent). Vascular Type EDS is considered the most serious form of EDS due to the possibility of arterial or organ rupture. Although joint hypermobility occurs, it is much less prominent in vEDS than the other more common types and is mainly confined to the hands.

The Center for Complex Neurology, EDS & POTS is dedicated to caring for patients with complex neurological problems, including Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. EDS is often an invisible disability and it is important to have the right physicians in your corner.

🦠 Post-COVID and still not feeling right?
You’re not imagining it, it might be Dysautonomia.

Many people are developing POTS-like symptoms after COVID:
⚡️ Racing heart
😵‍💫 Dizziness
🧠 Brain fog
😴 Crushing fatigue

This isn’t “just anxiety.” It’s your nervous system misfiring, and it’s more common than people realize.

Center for Complex Neurology

We provide expert diagnosis and treatment of selected diseases, to include ALS, CIDP, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, (EDS), GBS, Neuropathy, Myositis, Muscular Dystrophy, Myasthenia Gravis, POTS & other dysautonomias. Dr. Saperstein has over 20 years of experience diagnosing, treating and researching these conditions.

Why did I create the Center for Complex Neurology?

Over the last 22 years I have been practicing medicine I have done so in a variety of settings: on staff at a university medical center, in private practice, as part of a health care system, and even in the U.S. military (Air Force). Each system had it pluses and minuses. But all forms of medical practice have come under strain in recent years from unprecedented changes in the health care system.
