To help address healthcare workforce gaps through bold innovation, Creighton couldn’t open a health sciences campus just anywhere in Phoenix.

It chose Midtown Phoenix—an area that has since emerged as the Phoenix Medical Quarter, a dynamic hub for bioscience, education and research, alongside partners like St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and , with close regional collaborator .

The 195,000-square-foot Virginia G. Piper Creighton University Health Sciences Campus prepares future healthcare leaders through immersive, interprofessional training embedded within one of the Valley’s most important healthcare ecosystems.

With Arizona projected to face shortages of 90,000 physicians and 50,000 nurses by 2030, Creighton is helping shape a meaningful future of healthcare in the Southwest.

Healthcare improvement requires more than new ideas—it requires understanding the experiences of patients, providers and communities.

A recent Creighton University story highlights how Human-Centered Design (HCD) is helping healthcare professionals approach complex challenges through listening, observation and collaboration.

In the Leading Change through Human-Centered Design course, participants apply this framework to real workplace challenges. Creighton faculty member Jessica Goodman, PT, DPT, PhD, used the approach while working with St. Vincent de Paul’s Virginia G. Piper Medical Clinic to explore how fall-prevention strategies could better reflect patients’ daily realities.

Former Division I athlete and Creighton Phoenix alumna Cassidy Schilling, OTD’25, is now helping burn survivors rebuild their lives as an occupational therapist at Valleywise Health.

Working with patients of all ages and levels of injury, Cassidy helps individuals navigate recovery physically, mentally and emotionally as they rebuild independence after burn trauma.

“No two people heal the same way,” she said. “As an OT, I want to help every patient value themselves as a person and maintain their optimal life post-burn.”

As part of her Creighton doctoral capstone, Cassidy also created a burn rehabilitation guide and a children’s book to help survivors and families better understand the recovery process.

Her work reflects a commitment to caring for the whole person — supporting patients as they heal, adapt and move forward.

It takes just 40 seconds for compassion to make a measurable difference in patient care.

That insight challenges the belief that meaningful connection requires more time than today’s healthcare systems allow. According to Creighton professor Tom Lenz, PharmD, compassion is not about taking on a patient’s suffering. It is about presence, connection and intentional engagement, even in brief moments.

Learn how Creighton’s Integrative Care Certificate helps healthcare professionals strengthen compassionate care while supporting their own well-being.

Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance

In September 2017, Creighton University, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Maricopa Integrated Health System and District Medical Group entered into a strategic partnership designed to improve and expand Graduate Medical Education programs and to develop academic and clinical education programs in nursing, pharmacy, allied health and medicine through a collaborative organization. The Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance serves as the centralized organization administering residencies and fellowships previously managed by each partnering institution. The programs are under the sponsorship of Creighton University.
