18 years as a feeding therapist, and I’m still learning something new every day!

These “veggies” are actually fruit: egg plant, olives, squash, peppers, pea pods, tomatoes, pumpkins.

Also nuts and sunflower seeds. đŸ€Ż

It’s never too soon to start! There’s plenty you can do to help your child while you’re waiting for services. ❀

Prepping healthy snacks ahead of time reduces your child’s desire to grab “junk food” from a cabinet. Kids love autonomy (independence). Prepping and placing healthier snacks at your child’s eye level (fruits, veggies, and cheese) can help your child independently make healthy choices.

đŸ„• Having healthy choices rinsed and cut into appropriate sizes for your child makes grabbing these choices quick when time is short! (Side note: my boys are 9, and I still cut their grapes, especially if they’ll be having this snack away from me - such as packed in a school lunch).

đŸ„• Use fun and kid size kitchens tools to encourage your kids to help with meal and snack preparation.

đŸ„• If you want to pre-cut bananas or place them in fruit salad, splay with a little lemon juice to keep them from browning. This works for apples too!

đŸ„• Fruit salad is a great way to teach variety. A child who isn’t ready for something new may pick around their non-preferred fruits, but still gains exposure to them.
If your child isn’t ready for that kind of adventure, simply place one type of fruit in each container. Or use a divided container so preferred and non-preferred food won’t touch.

3 simple things you can do NOW! đŸ„•

1. Make your mealtimes fun. Place less emphasis on the stress and the food. Mindfully focus on the people in your circle, social opportunities, and fun that can be had.

2. Establish a routine. Most parents let their child graze when they fear they’re not getting enough calories. Spoiler alert: the ticket to caloric intake is appetite. Less grazing = greater intake at meal times!

3. Change your language. “You won’t” should sound like “you can”. “He doesn’t eat that” should be “he’s still learning about that.”
Finally, your kids are watching you. If you don’t like broccoli keep that to yourself! Emphasize the food you love!

Spoiler alert đŸššâ€Œïž I’m an OT and my heart is in sensory intervention! But, I’m also trained in Applied Behavioral Analysis, and have a great understanding of 2 very different professional perspectives! I know we can all “play in the same sandbox” if we’re willing to learn from one another! So let’s come together at the table and help kids to enjoy meals with their families! đŸ„•

Oops - we forgot one! Signs that your child has poor lip control may include: open mouth posture, drooling, holding hands to their mouths when chewing to help keep the food in!
