𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞 was honored to participate in Career Day, where our Director of Clinical Services ( Vanessa Noto ) spoke with elementary students about the importance of healthcare, nursing, and hospice care.

Through engaging conversation and kid-friendly examples, students learned:

💉 What nurses do and how they help people heal
💙 How hospice supports patients and families with comfort and compassion
🌟 Why kindness and empathy are powerful tools in healthcare
👩‍⚕️ How caring for others can become a meaningful career

💙 Does My Loved One Qualify for Hospice?

This is one of the most common questions families whisper to me…

“Is it time?”

Sometimes it’s asked with tears.
Sometimes with guilt.
Sometimes with exhaustion.

Let’s talk about it clearly — and compassionately.

Hospice is not about giving up.
It is about shifting the focus from cure to comfort.
From “How much longer?” to “How well can we live right now?”

📋 What Do the Guidelines Say?

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a person may qualify for hospice if:

👉 A physician believes the individual may have 6 months or less to live if the illness follows its natural course.

That does not mean someone will pass in six months.
Some people live longer. Some live shorter. Hospice is based on prognosis — not a countdown clock.

💙 What It Often Looks Like in Everyday Life

Families rarely see “six months.”
They see changes.

You may notice:

🔹 Sleeping 18–20 hours a day
🔹 More hospitalizations or ER visits in the past 6–12 months
🔹 Ongoing weight loss or poor appetite
🔹 Increasing confusion or memory decline
🔹 Needing help with bathing, dressing, or walking
🔹 Recurrent infections (UTIs, pneumonia)
🔹 More frequent falls
🔹 Shortness of breath at rest
🔹 Difficulty swallowing or choking episodes
🔹 Needing total assistance with most daily activities

Often families say:

“They’re just not the same anymore.”

That matters.

🩺 Diagnoses That Commonly Qualify

While every person is evaluated individually, hospice often supports patients with:

• Advanced heart disease
• End-stage COPD
• Advanced dementia (FAST stage 7 and beyond)
• Metastatic or progressive cancer
• ALS or advanced neurological disease
• General overall decline with multiple chronic illnesses

It is not just the diagnosis — it is the overall decline.

💬 What Families Need to Hear

You are allowed to ask.

You are allowed to gather information.

You are allowed to have a hospice evaluation — it costs nothing.

You are allowed to revoke hospice at any time.

You are allowed to go to the ER.

You are allowed to change your mind.

Hospice does not “hold” anyone.
It is not a trap.
It is a benefit designed to support families during one of life’s most vulnerable seasons.

🌿 What Hospice Actually Provides

• Pain and symptom management
• Nurse visits and 24/7 on-call support
• Hospice aides for personal care
• Social worker support
• Spiritual care if desired
• Medical equipment and medications related to the terminal diagnosis
• Emotional support for the entire family

Hospice is about adding support — not taking it away.

Sometimes the most loving decision isn’t “doing more.”

It’s choosing peace.
It’s choosing comfort.

The Dying Process Explained

Most people fear dying because no one explains it.

Dying is usually a gradual shutting down of the body.

Weeks before:
• More sleeping
• Less eating
• Increased weakness

Days before:
• Minimal appetite
• More confusion
• Irregular breathing

In the last 24–72 hours:
• Long pauses between breaths
• Cool hands and feet
• Little response

This is not starvation.
This is not “giving up.”
This is the body conserving energy.

With proper comfort care, most people are not suffering.

Dying is often quieter and more peaceful than we imagine.

Be present. Hold their hand. Speak gently. 💙
