Shout Out to Candy who did a Micro- Walk with her friends and family!

" has really impacted my family and our fur babies.

My first lab, Libby, was a chocolate lab who was my soul animal. We bonded from the moment I got her. I truly believe she understood English and I could talk to her just like a human. She would sit in the front seat of the car like a person and would even put herself behind the seatbelt. She had a habit of eating things she wasn’t supposed to (like a typical lab). She had eaten several kumquats off my neighbor’s tree and I took her to the emergency vet. They did an X-ray and found a mass on her adrenal gland that was millimeters away from her heart. We had it removed and it was cancer (Adrenocortical Carcinoma). She had lymph nodes removed and had to go back for X-rays every six months until her passing in 2017 right after her 14th birthday.

My second lab, Harley, was a black lab who was the gentlest soul I have ever encountered. He never met a stranger and loved to be loved. We got him through a rescue and he had a hard time adjusting after we lost Libby. He was a follower but learned to be an only child and lived his best life. He had several lumps that we had removed throughout his life but one was found to be a soft tissue sarcoma. Because of his age, we decided not to remove it. We then noticed that he was urinating blood and thought it was just a bladder infection. Unfortunately, there was a mass and was diagnosed with Bladder cancer (Transitional Cell Carcinoma). We tried chemotherapy but he did not handle it well. He was 15 years old and decided that we wouldn’t put him through that. He almost made it to his 16th birthday.

After Harley’s passing, I dealt with being an empty nester. Having a pup was something I missed and we rescued a Blue Lacy/Lab mix. Baylor is now 5 years old and we had a scare when they found a nodule on lymph node and we thought it was Lymphoma. It was tested by an outside lab and it turned out not to be. He is cancer free at the moment thank goodness."

Meet Mia - she was 4 when cancer took her from her family. This past weekend her family and her doggie cousin Beau walked 2.5 miles in her honor.

"Mia had a complicated journey w/cancer starting with misdiagnoses in October when she was only 3yo, which left us with no options during an emergency. We luckily live near a teaching vet hospital (PennVet) and got her there where they found she had an extremely rare lymphoma and began radiation immediately, then chemo. Her case was extremely rare from what we understand and they are still trying to figure out exactly what type of lymphoma it was. We really benefited first hand from all the research and work that has been done to develop treatments and case studies of other rare cases. And as difficult as this has been, we are so grateful to have been able to give Mia some more good months, and she celebrated her 4th birthday in December, all which we wouldn't have been able to without the treatments, but of course wish there was more we could have done, so it is very meaningful to participate in this walk"

now walk Odin is a ! So far in this walk he and Janay and his pup brother and friends have walked 72 miles!

Odin, an 11-year old Husky, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2024 and is now coming up on 2 years of remission!

Join Odin in the walk http://pinkpawlove.funraise.org

Janay and Lou rescued Odin from a So. Cal shelter when he was 4. Odin LOVES his daily runs and loses his mind when he gets to run in the snow. They chased many weird symptoms like a rash on his pads and nose until one day they found out he had multiple myeloma after he had stopped eating when he was 9. By this time his blood protein level had caused an acute kidney injury. His vet ran a urine test specific for which confirmed the diagnosis. Odin was treated aggressively for 2 weeks with melphalan, prednisone, fluids and immune herbs. A few months later the rash disappeared. Then over the course of 8 months he was able to move to a maintenance treatment regime.

Now, we can call Odin a SURVIVOR!

Jennifer B joined the walk for the first time last year with her pup Petey. They were walking for her 11 year old dog Rain, who had died from lymphocytic leukemia. Sadly, Jennifer has joined the walk this year in memory of Petey too.

Join Jennifer in fight cancer in our precious dogs by walking with us, spreading the word and raising funding -

Here is her story in her words:
Rain was my dog I had for 10 years, the first dog of my own. She was my best friend. One day I noticed her lymph nodes under her jaw were like golf balls. I was terrified. She was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The oncologist told me she could live for years with treatment, and initially just watched her white blood cell count. By the time it was high enough to start the chemo, she suddenly passed less than a week into her treatment, she just suddenly fell over while we were walking and passed very quickly. She was 11.

A year later, I got Petey. She was just perfect. But 6 mos after I adopted her, I thought I noticed a fullness under her jaw too. I thought, I must be paranoid. Less than a week later, she was diagnosed with B cell lymphoma. I went back to the same oncology practice, but with a different doctor. He offered me the treatment options, and I chose the gold standard treatment. When I asked her prognosis, he said 14 mos. I set out to fight the battle with her. She responded well to treatment over 6 mos. Less than two months later, her nodes became huge again, to the point where it affected her breathing. She relapsed that quickly. I was still optimistic with my oncologist starting rescue chemo for relapse. Initially she responded well. Then, one drug after another, she would briefly improve, then go back to where she was with the swollen nodes. She was still eating, drinking and going for walks, until the day before her last day. The drugs stopped working, and the oncologist said we had met our match. Petey declined her last night. I knew I would have to let her go the next day. But found her passed in the hallway that next morning. It was about 10 mos since her diagnosis, and a year and 4 mos to the day since I had adopted her.

Walking helps to create endorphins, the feel-good chemical in your body. So, just the act of walking to the end of the street or a full mile will start to get those feel-good chemicals flowing and your mood elevated.

Walking with a friend or group establishes a social connection that allows us to process the grief.

There’s something about walking with a purpose, with a story, with other people who get it… it turns grief into connection instead of isolation.

Dogs tolerate chemo pretty well, but there is sometimes a side effect of diarrhea, but that is easily and quickly handled. Metronidazole used to be the go to for this, but now Canlevia is the better choice. If you are experiencing this side effect, have a quick chat with your vet about it.
