π The Mexica New Year marks the sacred renewal of time according to the ancient Aztec sunstone calendar. But there are can found slightly varied translations of time.
In Mesoamerica, time was not just counted but also ceremonial, spiritual, and alive. The new year represents the moment when the cycle of the sun completes and begins again, bringing an opportunity for renewal, balance, and alignment with the cosmos.
The calendar is made up of 365 days, similar to the solar year. It consists of:
β’ 18 months of 20 days each (360 days)
β’ plus 5 additional sacred days called Nemontemi, considered a liminal time for reflection, cleansing, and spiritual protection.
In many contemporary Mexica traditions, the new year is aligned with the movement of the sun and the spring seasonal transition. The date is commonly recognized around March 11β13, depending on the year.
β³ This calculation comes from aligning the ancient solar calendar with the agricultural and solar cycles of central Mexico, particularly the period when the sun returns to a balanced position near the spring equinox.
Ceremonial keepers and cultural practitioners often observe the new year on March 12, though some communities may mark it slightly differently depending on lineage, regional tradition, or astronomical interpretation.
Traditionally, this transition was honored with ceremony, prayer, fire, offerings, and community gatherings.
π₯ It was a time to:
β¨ Release what no longer serves
β¨ Cleanse the body and spirit
β¨ Give thanks to the sun and the ancestors
β¨ Set intentions for the coming cycle
For many people today, like myself on a path of remembering and reconnecting with my Mexica traditions, the Mexica New Year is a return to ancestral rhythm. A reminder that we are part of the earth, the sun, and the cycles of life.
π 2026 is vital because we are entering year 1 Tochtli (1 Rabbit) under the guardianship of Michlantecuhtli Lord of Death. This being an important year as it marks the beginning of a new 52 year count.
May this be the BLOOM year where many seeds you planted finally take root and meet Father Sun!
Ometeotl,
Consuelo π
