“Art and the Healthy Brain” is an art program developed by Carol Heischober using her 40 years of experience teaching art in public and private therapeutic institutions. For the seniors at Marian Manor, a non-profit Assisted Living Community in Virginia Beach Virginia, her approach to teaching basic acrylic painting encompasses residents with cognitive and physical disabilities. Her program provides residents with structural and non-structural art lessons that helps them to exercise their brains and improve their overall brain health and function. The art program also enriches the residents’ lives giving them purpose, freedom to express themselves, and outreach to the greater community. The demand for her art instruction has become so successful that Carol has implemented the program in several other lower income senior living housing and senior day care communities throughout the Hampton Roads and Chesapeake areas of Virginia. “Art and the Healthy Brain” is now available in book form, making this valuable program available to all communities.
