Our cohort from the Leadership Academy enjoyed their first session of the program, "Leading from Within."

It was a day of self-discovery, using psychometric tools to create profiles that highlight key personality traits and associated behaviours of everyone on the course. The exercise provided fantastic insights into behaviours, helping to boost individual performance and improve team dynamics.

Laura Davis, our Marketing and Communications Manager and a Colten Care employee for 15 years, shared her thoughts on the Colten Leadership Academy and her first session.

“Returning to a 'classroom' setting was refreshing, as I continuously learn on the job every day. Engaging in 'active' learning once more was a welcome change, and I was particularly excited about exploring leadership from the perspective of my own behaviour rather than focusing on how others behave.

I think the course will boost my confidence as a manager and equip me with new strategies for handling various situations, improving my communication methods with other team members and help my manager interact with me more effectively.

I was so surprised by the first session and the accuracy of my psychometric profile. It has already helped me understand myself better and provided insight into why I behave and react the way I do. I feel like that this self-discovery process will enable me to take a step back and rethink how I would approach situations within my team.”

Carol from Canford Chase rolled up her sleeves for a hands-on garden experience, helping gather ripe radishes and an assortment of other vegetables ready for harvesting.

The potager garden offers some amazing scents from the surrounding herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers, which are regularly used in the dishes cooked by the home’s Chef, Adam.

Carol remarked, “It is so lovely to see how much everything has grown. Isn’t it wonderful how all the lovely smells evoke memories? It reminds me of when I used to grow my own vegetables!”

What skills have you acquired so far that you believe are most valuable in your field?

It has also enhanced my ability to manage my time better time and keep on top of assignments and deadlines, which is a great skill to have in general.”

What misconceptions do you think people have about apprenticeships?

“A common misconception about apprenticeships is that sometimes they are looked at as only for young and academically inclined people. Meet Neve, part of our recruitment team at Colten Care.

Neve is nearing the completion of her Foundation Certificate in People Practice, which she began in 2023. Today, she shares insights into her experiences of her course so far.

Passion for HR:

"I've always been fascinated by the HR function in businesses. Continuous learning is very important to me and Colten Care offered the perfect opportunity to pursue my HR apprenticeship without compromising my role and I was excited by the chance to develop my skills.”

Positive Growth - Both Personal and Professional:

"My apprenticeship has been a catalyst for positive growth. It's made me more confident in my abilities and disciplined. The knowledge gained has deepened my understanding of my current role, and this has been a great feeling."

Skills Enrichment:

"Through my apprenticeship, I've gained various skills, and there has definitely been an improvement in my ability to articulate my thoughts in a clear and concise manner. I have also completed a topic on analytics so I class myself as a whizz when it comes to statistics and graphs now!”

Breaking Misconceptions:

"There's a misconception that apprenticeships are only for the young or limited to vocational industries. This is not true, there is actually no upper age limit to complete an apprenticeship, you just need to be age 16 as a minimum. Apprenticeships have come such a long way in recent years and you can now complete one in pretty much any field or industry that you can think of."

Future Opportunities:

"My apprenticeships will bring me new opportunities and career paths in the future. It will open up roles to me that I would not have had the skills or qualifications to be considered for before."

Advice for Aspiring Apprentices:

"To those considering an apprenticeship, research thoroughly and open your mind to possibilities. Focus on your desired career path, break it into achievable steps, and believe in yourself. Apprenticeships don't always require experience, just self-belief and a keen interest!"
