It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we’re proud to spotlight Mona Elzahab, an exceptional volunteer at St. Mary's Healthcare System for Children. Mona, a senior at Hunter College, has built a meaningful relationship with Matthew, one of St. Mary’s longtime patients. Through art, movies, puppet shows, and time spent together around the building, she has learned how to connect with him using his unique communication style. Their bond is a powerful example of how consistency, patience, and creativity can transcend words.

Mona also brings joy to children and young adults on 3CU and was recently named the 2026 NYSHFA Young Adult Volunteer of the Year. We are grateful for Mona and the special connection she has helped create every day.💙

Assistive Technology is our jam! April 22nd is Assistive Technology Awareness Day. Our inpatient assistive technology team including, Thomas Quinn SLP, ATP, Elizabeth Quinn OT, ATP & Gabriella De Vito, DPT, supports both short and long-term care patients, providing personalized technology to help each individual achieve the highest level of independence possible. From power wheelchairs and AAC devices to switches and switch-activated toys, assistive technology plays a vital role in empowering our patients. Working closely with the inpatient rehab department, the team ensures every patient is progressing toward meaningful goals—supporting independence, daily function, and for our short-term care patients, preparation for a successful transition home. 💙

From CNA to Nurse 💙 Ching Ching Yu and Chantai Smith began their journeys at St. Mary’s as CNAs, all while working toward their nursing degrees. Today, they take the next step forward.

Ching Ching is now an RN and Chantai is now an LPN, and both are starting their six week nursing orientation as they transition into their new roles. We are so proud to see their dedication, growth, and commitment to caring for our patients come full circle. This is what it means to grow within St. Mary’s. 👏
