🤍💙Today is International HPV Awareness Day! 💙🤍

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is very common. There are more than 200 types, some of these types can cause cancer. Almost 35,000 men and women get HPV cancers in the United States every year. 🦠🧬

Prevention is 🔑 don’t wait to vaccinate!! HPV infection has no treatment, but a vaccine can help prevent it. HPV vaccination can prevent more than 90% of HPV cancers when given at the recommended ages. HPV vaccination works best when given before age 13, HPV cancer prevention decreases the longer you wait. ⏱

🩺 You can visit cancer.org/HPV or talk to your doctor to get more information about the HPV vaccine. 📲💡

This past month, our chapter hosted a local counseling competition, in which students had the opportunity to show off and sharpen their counseling skills. They were given a patient chart with a new prescription, and 5 minutes to research, then 5 minutes to counsel their patient.

Many participated and 3 winners were chosen based on their skills, accuracy, and technique.

⭐️ 1st Place — Kayla Hutto, Class of 2023 (P3)
⭐️ 2nd Place — Sarina Shahidpour, Class of 2023 (P3)
⭐️ 3rd Place — Taylor Suydam, Class of 2023 (P3)

Thank you to ALL who participated, and congratulations to our winners! A link is posted in our bio with a Google Survey to help us improve this competition for next year. Even if you did *not* compete this year, please consider giving us feedback, as all is welcome! 👩🏼‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️💉💊

As we close out World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, the UofSC COP chapter of APhA-ASP hopes to highlight the importance of understanding antimicrobial resistance and the key role of pharmacists in this ongoing public health crisis.

According to a 2019 CDC report, more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result. It is essential that we utilize our role as health care professionals to advocate for our patients and do our part to promote optimal antibiotic use. 🦠💊🥼

Today, we raise awareness on tetracycline resistance!

Tetracyclines are considered broad spectrum antibiotics, and are impacted by a variety of resistance mechanisms. A key objective of the global action plan to combat the resistance of antimicrobial medicines is to improve awareness and understanding of resistance mechanisms through communication, education, and training.

Therefore, be sure to use your role as a pharmacist or pharmacy student to communicate, educate, and train on this crucial issue. 💊🥼🦠

Next up is: azole antifungals!

Antibiotic resistance is a pandemic that can only be addressed through joint efforts by all stakeholders involved, making education all the more important.

As pharmacists, we hold a crucial place in our ability to educateKeep following for the remainder of the week as we continue to break down some of the key information regarding this global health issue. 💊🥼🦠

Our next antimicrobial drug class is beta-lactams!

Understanding beta-lactam resistance is key in ensuring positive health outcomes in those infected with a variety of different gram-positive and gram-negative bugs.

In observance of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, the UofSC College of Pharmacy chapter of APhA-ASP will continue to educate on this important global health issue throughout the week. 🦠🧫🔬💊

Did you know that, “30.3 million people—roughly 9.4% of the population—are living with diabetes. Of those 30.3 million people, approximately 23.1 million have been diagnosed with the condition and 7.2 million are undiagnosed,” according to APhA.

World Diabetes Day was November 14th, however, the entire month of November is Diabetes Awareness Month. As pharmacists, we have the opportunity to advocate, educate, and counsel on this prevalent disease state, and support those who are diagnosed, or at risk.

Anytime during the month of November, you can post to the campaign (https://insulin4all.tumblr.com/submit) to unite the community as a global force to push for accessibility for all. Once you submit to this campaign, send a screenshot to sls13@email.sc.edu to receive a FREE diabetes lapel pin, to show your support proudly on your white coat. As always — this link will be accessible in our bio!
