Black women in America are dying in childbirth at three times the rate of white women.

This is the system Brianna walked into when she went into labor at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. And when she told her doctors what she wanted for her own body, the state of Florida held a court hearing in her delivery room to override her decision.

Women’s voices, especially Black women’s voices are systematically dismissed. Their pain is minimized, their bodies are overruled, their health care left for others to decide. And people like Brianna pay the price.

We just put up these billboards in Tallahassee today. Here’s why:

Florida’s six-week abortion ban went into effect in May 2024. Since then, no data on maternal mortality in Florida has been published. Florida’s maternal mortality rate is already among the highest in the country and even worse for women of color.

But this strategy is not unique to Florida. States with abortion bans all over the country are quietly dismantling the committees designed that track maternal deaths. They don’t want you to see the numbers because they know what those numbers say: abortion bans kill. Release the data.

In September 2024, Brianna was in active labor when the state of Florida held a three-hour court hearing in her delivery room to determine whether she should have a C-section against her will. She had no lawyer and no warning. Over a dozen people crowded into her delivery room to watch a judge decide what would happen to her body while she was having contractions. Every pregnant person has the right to decide what happens to their own body. Brianna was not given that right.
