Twas the night before Small Business Saturday and I keep thinking about how many times on this journey I tried to shrink myself to make other people comfortable. Starting out in speech pathology feels a lot like standing on a stage you never auditioned for. So many voices around you. So many opinions. So many people who think they know what your path should look like.

When I created Speaking of Samantics, I heard all the critiques about the name. People told me it was spelled wrong. People didn’t get it. People had thoughts about what I should have done. But here’s what I learned very quickly. Your creativity is allowed to be yours. Your choices are allowed to be yours. Your dreams are allowed to be yours.

You were not made to fit into someone else’s version of what an SLP or SLPA should look like. You were never meant to be a copy. The things that make you different are the things that make you unforgettable. Your clients see that. Your community feels that. And the world needs you to keep following the path that feels true in your chest, even when it sways from the norm.

Give yourself permission to dream in a way that has nothing to do with perfection and everything to do with who you are becoming.

Small Business Saturday always reminds me how much magic comes from taking a chance on the thing that only you can build.

lately we’ve been having a lot of necessary conversations about the tough parts of this profession, but future clinicians who are getting ready to apply to grad school have been reaching out saying it’s starting to make them feel discouraged.

Grad school is important, but so is living your life. Professors, thank you for all you do to guide and support your students. It truly means so much. But this is also a chance to rethink the idea that students have “extra time” to tackle big assignments. Rest and connection are just as valuable for growth as academics.

And to my grad students, you are so much more than your to-do list. Take the break you deserve, spend time with your loved ones, and soak in the little moments. The work will still be there when you’re ready, but the chance to be present with your family, friends, and yourself won’t always wait.🤟
