Today, New York became the 14th jurisdiction in the United States to allow medical aid in dying. As an organization committed to helping individuals and families navigate end-of-life care, we applaud the tireless advocates who fought for the passing of this bill over the past ten years, especially those who could not live to see this day.

The bill will go into effect six months from now. This will give clinicians time to review qualification criteria and build a solid understanding of the bill while they prepare to accept patients.

Last week, sculptor Jackie Ferrara died at the time of her choosing through medical aid-in-dying. Her work included projects ranging from small-scale wooden sculptures to large-scale architectural forms. She was 95 years old.

Acclaimed artist Jackie Ferrara traveled to Switzerland to end her life at a clinic called Pegasos, an assisted dying nonprofit organization that doesn’t require patients to be terminally ill.
