Jema Design Full Service Interior Design: Kitchen & Bath Design, Whole Home Remodeling and Commercial Design.

Hi there, I’m Marilyn, and I can’t wait to help you craft your dream home! Design has been a passion of mine from a young age and very much inspired by my mother who was a seamstress. I also used to spend Christmases decorating my grandparents’ home in Belize and found that my “happy place” has always been arranging furniture and choosing decór. When I was 18, I migrated from Belize to LA and eventually moved to New York, where my interior design studio is today. From working in the Brooklyn DA’s office to the NYU School of Medicine, I have a diverse career background but always knew that interior design was my true calling—so I followed it! I first completed an interior decorating course while working for two major design firms in Staten Island before founding Jema Design in 2005. Having grown my clientele and connections, I felt it was time to further my education, and in 2014, I graduated with a BFA in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), one of the most prestigious design schools in the world. My strong connections to local tradespeople, contractors, and vendors in Staten Island and beyond enables me to execute design journeys from beginning to end. Managing all communications with my partner network, I relieve my clients of the hassle of organizing an entire remodeling project. It’s my mission to create the best living experience for my clients through functional space design and compelling interior architecture. Along with my interior design team, I create modern homes and businesses that blend architecture, art, light, shadow, texture, and color to create an environment that reflects the unique lives of my clients.

Current interior design trends consist of a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality. They also lean towards natural elements and sustainability. Biophilic design, which emphasizes lots of natural light, and organic materials like plants, bamboo, and wood, are gaining a ton of popularity. Such designs create refreshing and tranquil spaces. Earthy tones and subtle color palettes are preferred, offering a calming atmosphere. Multifunctional furniture is also on the rise, especially in smaller homes, due to the need for adaptable spaces. Additionally, retro and vintage styles are coming back, but with a modern twist, adding a nostalgic and comforting effect to contemporary interiors. Sustainable materials and eco-friendly design practices are also trending, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental impact in choices surrounding home decor.

Designing your space with pets in mind ensures a harmonious environment that accommodates their needs while maintaining style and functionality.

-Opt for pet-friendly materials such as stain-resistant fabrics, like leather for upholstery, and easy-to-clean flooring options like hardwood.
-Choose furniture with removable, washable covers or cushions.
-Create designated areas for your pets, such as a cozy bed in a quiet spot, or a feeding station that’s easily accessible but away from too much foot traffic.
-Incorporate storage solutions for treats, toys and grooming supplies to keep them tidy and out of sight when not being used.
-Ensure that any houseplants are non-toxic to pets and secure hazardous items such as small objects or electrical cords that pets may chew on.
-Choose decor items that are safe for pets, such as sturdy vases or wall-mounted shelves for displaying items out of reach. Avoid fragile decor pieces.

Traveling can be a wonderful source of inspiration for interior design projects, influencing everything from decor themes to color schemes. Experiencing diverse cultures exposes you to unique architectural styles and traditional crafts that spark the utmost creativity. For instance, a trip to Morocco might inspire you to incorporate intricate tile work and rich, blue tones into your space, while Scandinavian design principles might influence you towards minimalist furniture and natural materials with sharp, clean lines. Even subtle details like the way light filters through Mediterranean windows or the cozy textiles of a Japanese ryokan can shape your choices in textiles and lighting. Travel not only broadens your design ideas but also allows you to bring pieces of the world back home with you, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also tell stories of your adventures overseas.✨

Materials:
Boards (1x4 or 1x6 for battens, and wider boards for the baseboard and top rail), nails/screws, construction adhesive, level, measuring tape, paint/stain, caulk, sandpaper, paint brushes/rollers.

-Measure your wall to see how many boards you’ll need. Decide on the spacing and height of your battens (vertical pieces) and mark the wall.
-Install a baseboard along the bottom of the wall. Use construction adhesive and nails or screws to secure it.
-Install a top rail horizontally along the top of where your battens will be. Again, use construction adhesive and nails/screws to secure it.
-Measure and cut your vertical battens to size. Apply construction adhesive to the back and press them into place against the wall, aligning them with your markings. Secure with nails or screws. Use a level to ensure straightness.
-Fill any nail or screw holes with wood filler. Once dry, sand the filled areas and the entire wall surface lightly.
-Prime and then, apply your preferred paint or stain.
-Once the paint or stain is dry, caulk around the edges of the boards and along the top and bottom where they meet the wall. This prevents gaps.
-Let everything dry before adding decor.✨

Here are three brief bathroom backsplash ideas:

1. Subway Tiles: Classic and versatile, subway tiles in a herringbone pattern add an unforgettable charm to any bathroom. Opt for white tiles to achieve a clean, bright look, or choose colored tiles to add a fun pop of personality.
2. Mosaic Tiles: Create a focal point with mosaic tiles in a variety of patterns or colors. Consider a mosaic border around the vanity mirror or a full backsplash behind the sink for an artistic feel.
3. Natural Stone: Use natural stone tiles like travertine or marble for an elegant and luxurious backsplash. These materials add texture and sophistication, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the bathroom.

1. Living Room:

-Arrange seating around a focal point like a fireplace or TV. Create conversation areas with sofas and chairs facing each other.
-Incorporate ambient lighting with ceiling lights or floor lamps, and task lighting for reading corners or side tables.

2. Bedroom:

-Position the bed against the longest wall for optimal space usage. Ensure there’s easy access on both sides for nightstands.
-Utilize under-bed storage, dressers, and wardrobes to keep the room clutter-free.

3. Kitchen:

-Design the kitchen in a triangle layout (sink, stove, refrigerator) for efficient movement. Ensure ample counter space for food preparation.
-Maximize cabinet and pantry storage with organizers. Consider open shelving for displaying decorative items or frequently used items.

4. Bathroom:

1. What colors should I choose for my walls?
• When choosing wall colors, consider the room’s purpose and atmosphere you want to create. Lighter shades like soft whites, pastels, or neutrals can make a room feel larger and airy, while deeper tones like dark blue or a striking gray add drama and coziness.
2. How can I make a small room look bigger?
• To visually expand a small room, use light colors for walls and furniture to reflect more light. Opt for furniture with legs to create a sense of openness, and strategically place mirrors to enhance depth and brightness. Don’t forget to eliminate unnecessary clutter!
3. What are some budget-friendly ways to update my home decor?
• Refresh your home decor without the pretty penny by repurposing existing furniture with new upholstery or paint. Invest in statement-making accessories like rugs, pillows, or artwork to add character. DIY projects, such as creating wall galleries or refurbishing thrifted treasures can also elevate your space without breaking the bank.

Arranging furniture based on the shape of your room is an essential factor for an optimal space. Begin by assessing the room’s dimensions and focal points, such as windows, doors, or architectural features like a slanted ceiling. In a square room, consider placing larger furniture pieces like couches against the walls to maximize the center space so you and your guests can move freely. For rectangular rooms, utilize the longer walls for key furniture placements. In L-shaped rooms, divide the space into functional zones—such as seating and dining areas—using furniture arrangement to properly distinguish each zone. Finally, in irregularly shaped rooms, be flexible with furniture placement to balance the functionality and flow, ensuring cozy corners and clear pathways. Always aim for a layout that promotes both aesthetics and practicality.
