As we enter Shabbat, we reflect on Parashat Chaye Sarah and the profound act of love and respect that begins our portion: the first Jewish burial.

The story of Abraham purchasing the Cave of Machpelah for Sarah's resting place is a lesson in Kavod HaMet (honoring the deceased). It teaches us that caring for our loved ones is an ultimate expression of our humanity, extending beyond their lifetime.

Abraham's deep devotion sets a powerful precedent for our community: We are always there for each other.

The path of life brings moments of great joy and great challenge. Just as Abraham cared for Sarah in her final hour, we are here to care for our community β€” for all of life's transitions and difficulties.

If you, or someone you know, needs our support, HFBA is here 24/7.

🌟 Honoring Our Heroes This Veterans Day 🌟

This Veterans Day, the Hebrew Free Burial Association joins the nation in honoring the brave men and women who have served our country.

We were deeply moved and incredibly grateful this week as the thoughtful seniors from The Heschel School visited one of our cemeteries. They performed a profound act of remembrance, meticulously placing flags on the graves of Jewish veterans who are laid to rest under the care of the HFBA.

Their solemn dedication ensures that the sacrifices of these heroes are never forgotten.

To all who have served, we thank you for your courage, your service, and your sacrifice. May their memories be a blessing.

Shabbat Shalom! This is what Chesed looks like. πŸ‘‡

Huge thanks to the dedicated students from ASHAR who spent their Chesed Day with us at Mount Richmond Cemetery this week.

The students worked in an area of the cemetery that is over 100 years old. Their commitment to honoring the memory of those buried there through hands-on service made a huge difference! Seeing the next generation embrace chesed shel emet is the greatest gift. We look forward to ASHAR visit us again next year.

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom.

As we prepare for Shabbat, we reflect on the deepest act of kindness: chesed shel emet.

Today Times of Israel shared a feature piece on our history and the sacred work we do: Click to read the full story: https://www.timesofisrael.com/the-haunting-history-of-the-jewish-burial-society-that-cares-for-nycs-lost-and-forgotten/

For over 130 years, our mission has been simple but sacred: to ensure every Jew, regardless of their circumstance, receives the dignity of a proper Jewish burial.

This weekend, we invite you to learn more about this enduring commitment. The Times of Israel just published a powerful article sharing the haunting history and inspiring dedication of the HFBA as we care for NYC’s lost and forgotten.

Wishing you and your family a peaceful and meaningful Shabbat.

Today, the 8th graders from Yeshiva of South Shore visited Mount Richmond Cemetery ery for a Chesed volunteer day. While they were with us, they assisted a widow in making a minyan for her husband's funeral. After the funeral, they spent time raking leaves and learning about Jewish burial traditions. We are grateful they could join and have the opportunity to perform Chesed Shel Emet, the highest kindness.

Shabbat Shalom from the HFBA family. This week, we observed "Monument Day" at Mount Richmond Cemetery . It's the day our bulk order of grave stones arrives, a truly significant moment. We place these orders in bulk to help lower costs for families during difficult times, and also to honor those remembered through our "Leave Your Mark" campaign – ensuring everyone has a lasting tribute. We are so grateful for your support in making this possible.

A huge thank you to the 10th-grade students from MTA (Yeshiva University High School for Boys) for volunteering yesterday!

They made a real difference at Mount Richmond Cemetery, helping us clean up a section that's over 110 years old. In addition to their hard work, they also learned about our mission at Hebrew Free Burial Association and the customs of traditional Jewish burial.

Thank You!

Today is the 114th yartzeit for the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. 146 innocent people died in this tragedy, forever changing American labor law. Most who died, were immigrants with little or no money to afford a burial. HFBA buried 22 of these victims at Mount Richmond Cemetery. Today is Tisha B'Av, the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av. In remembrance of the destruction of the Temple, as well as other tragedies, Tisha B'Av is a time to turn to our communities and to our history. Our rabbis teach that chesed shel emet – caring for the dead with dignity – is one of the greatest mitzvot any person can fulfill.
