‘I love the challenge of making something huge. I find it really satisfying and fun to do, and I love the impact they have.‘
Jenny, who works in a family-run wool, fabric and haberdashery shop, crocheted a giant labubu to raise money for people affected by dementia.
'People always ask if the large creations I make for our window displays are for sale, which gave me the idea to raffle them off for charity.
'I was aware of the labubu craze, and I just suddenly thought 'oh I could do a giant one’, as you do.
'And once I get an idea in my head, I can get a bit obsessed. So I rushed to get it done so the school children could see it during the summer holidays and on their way to and from school at the beginning of the September term.
'We have always chosen the Alzheimer's Society as our chosen charity as both my grandma and my nan had Alzheimer’s/dementia. My grandad is currently living with dementia.
'It’s a truly terrible disease which is often worse for the loved ones that have to witness that person slowly losing who they are and forgetting those close to them.
'Most people know someone that’s been affected in one way or another, and we often get people just donating to the cause, not actually wanting to win the item. It’s something that means a lot to a lot of people.
'We raised £923 for the labubu. I was particularly surprised at how far afield people were buying from. I never expected to sell so many tickets.
'The labubu is crocheted using super chunky chenille yarn it took me two weeks to make, just working on it in the evenings.
'The person whose number was drawn was thrilled she had won and intends to keep it and enjoy it for a while before raffling it off again for another charity. It’s lovely to think that it will go on to make more money for good causes.
'I already have an idea for another project to make, so watch this space!'
[Image description: Two side by side photographs of a giant purple crochet labubu in one image. On the left, the labubu is comically sat in the seat of the car, with the seatbelt fastened around it. Thankfully, it is sat in the passenger seat, and not the driver's seat. On the right, the labubu is behind held by a young woman, who is standing in a garden, with both arms diagonally wrapped around its torso. She is smiling jubilantly to the camera.]
