Between the weather changes 🥶☀️ ⛈️ 💨, wrapping up school before break, holiday parties and celebrations—who has time for being sick?! AmmmIright?! 🤦🏼‍♀️🫠

This week’s roundup our top three offenders are STILL:

• Flu A
• RSV
• Strep

To help you navigate these hectic sick times —here are a couple of notes on these specific illnesses:

Is it Flu, RSV, or Strep?

💨 FLU A
• Sudden high fever (102-104°F)
• Body aches & extreme fatigue
• Dry cough + sore throat
• Headache & chills
• Hits hard and fast

🫁 RSV
• Starts like a cold (runny nose, sneezing)
• Wheezing & rapid breathing

We know the news is constant cycle of political, medical and economic uncertainty. If you’re looking for a pediatrics practice, please know that Manhattan Valley Pediatrics was founded by the principles of evidence-based, science-backed medicine and health. Our new website continues to offer free resources for new and established patients like our new blog on the Hepatitis B vaccine, why it’s important and why we recommend it for newborns.

As always, if you have a question about your infant, child, adolescent or teen—we’re here to help and many of our providers are also parents of varying ages so we come with our own experiences to help guide you.

Check out the new blog on Hep B under Resources on our website or click on our Linktree.

The temps are dropping 🥶, the holidays 🕎 are upon us and so is the season of sick, sick, sick kiddos 🫠Let’s hope we can all get back to healthy ASAP! Here’s what we saw in the office this week:

Flu A!!! ✅
Strep! ✅
Flu A and Strep together! ✅✅
RSV ✅
High fevers ✅
Stomach bug ✅

No way to sugar coat it, the uptown office has been swamped with sick visits. What can you do?

💡Practice proper hand washing 💦🧼🫧 technique with your kids—egg timers, sand timers, iPhone, sing a song you name it. 20 seconds is a good rule of thumb

💡Encourage kids to cover their mouth 👄 with their elbow 💪🏼 (not their hands🙅🏼‍♀️! when they feel the need to sneeze or cough.

💡Frequent elevator button pusher? Using taxis 🚕, Ubers, buses 🚌 or the subway 🚇 more often? All good and to be expected in the city—but if your kiddos are holding all the hand rails, door handles, etc —try to sanitize or hand wash when you get to your school, home, destination.

💡Masks: if one person is sick in your house try to contain it by bringing back the masks 😷 while the person(s) is/are contagious. The more we can stop the spread in the community, the faster this wave of Flu A (as just one example) is over.

💡Wash bedding 🛏️ 🧺 and disinfect high touch points 🎚️🎛️

💡Flu shots, RSV shots: are you and the whole family who are eligible up to date? Remember, even though Flu A is super prominent now there are still other strains of flu and it’s early in the season! You can get more than one strain of flu so get your shots friends 💉

💡Need a sick 🤒 visit next week? Utilize our ✌🏼📍second office if you’re able to ease the wait times for your family.

ℹ️ Expecting a baby 👶🏽 Prenatals are still being offered every Tuesday evening AND —Dr. Falcon is hosting an infant CPR & choking prevention ⛑️ class at the Columbus Circle office next Thursday, 12/18. Sign up in our links, website, etc.

Stay healthy NYC!

🥜 Time to Introduce Allergens? Here’s What Parents Need to Know!

🍳 Good news: Early introduction of allergenic foods can reduce your baby’s risk of developing food allergies by up to 86%!

Gone are the days of delaying peanuts and eggs—research now shows that introducing these foods early (around 4-6 months) is actually protective.

Is Your Baby Ready?
✓ Can sit with support
✓ Shows interest in food
✓ Has tried a few single-ingredient purees
✓ Got the green light from your pediatrician

ℹ️ How to Start Safely:
1. Introduce ONE new allergen every 2-3 days
2. Mix 2 tsp with breast milk, formula, or familiar puree
3. Give ¼ tsp first, wait 10 minutes, watch for reactions
4. If all clear, finish the portion and observe for 2 hours
5. Once tolerated, offer 2-3 times per week to maintain tolerance

⚠️ Call the office (917) 921-6219 if you see: hives, swelling, vomiting, or trouble breathing

ℹ️ Want to learn more? Read the full Q&A blog post from Dr. Falcon and on MVP’s website and check out our allergen introduction slides for a step-by-step guide!
