In Memory of Summer Semerad
8/21/2014-9/23/2016 And yet, childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded.

After being diagnosed with a Hepatoblastoma/ Hepatic Rhabdoid tumor (high risk pediatric liver cancer), Summer fought bravely for a year and a half before passing away in September 2016. Our time together had been a scary rollercoaster of surgeries and high intensity treatments, but our little Summer always kept a smile on her face, which helped us keep a smile on ours. In honor of our sweet, strong, beautiful Summer, we will be taking on the NYC Half Marathon this March. We are going 13.1 miles to honor Summer, a small feat compared to what she had taken on in her short time with us. We are looking forward to your support to meet our fund raising goal and appreciate your encouragement as we train for our race! Summer was just one of an estimated 263,000 new cases of cancer that affect children under the age of 20 worldwide every year. Less than 5% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancers each year. The money you donate will pay for research to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer.

This year, part of our Summer Strong fundraising is going to support Aurora Joy — a brave 2-year-old diagnosed with leukemia. Her mom, an SIUH nurse and family friend, has spent her career caring for others. Now it’s our turn to support them. 💛

This year’s Summer Strong Golf Outing raised $37,830, which was one of our best years yet. 💛⛳️

We do this every year in honor of our daughter Summer, through her Hero Fund with Alex’s Lemonade Stand. We are also using a portion of the proceeds to support a childhood cancer family directly as they undergo treatment with their little one.

It was our first year without Grandpa Timba - the heart and engine behind this event since day one. The hole he left was impossible to ignore, this year definitely felt like it belonged to both Summer and her Grandpa. 💛

Susan (aka Grammy) and Bob carried the weight with so much heart this year. All of our friends, family, sponsors, and players showed up with such strength and love. We felt it.

Thank you for helping us keep Summer’s light shining, and for honoring Timba in a way he deserved. We are endlessly grateful.
