Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the leader of the Make America Healthy Again movement, has criticized the American food system for “poisoning our kids” with pesticide-laden, ultra-processed meals. In the spring, he warned that “major, dramatic changes” in school-nutrition guidelines—co-signed by himself and the actual Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins—would come in time for the new school year. (They didn’t.)

However, in March, the U.S. Department of Agriculture abruptly terminated $1 billion in Biden-era funding that had helped food banks, schools, and child-care centers procure fresh food from local farmers. As laid out in the “Big Beautiful Bill,” the Trump Administration will also oversee deep slashes to the SNAP food-assistance program—meaning that fewer children will be automatically eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch at school, and fewer schools will be able to continue offering universal free-meal programs. “MAHA’s stated commitment to improving child nutrition and the Administration’s antipathy toward social services are apparently incompatible,” Jessica Winter writes.
