The Open Door's mission is to empower immigrants to reach their full God-given potential to successfully integrate, participate, and contribute to the well-being of our society. We do this by offering FREE English and Digital Literacy classes, as well as a supportive community and free workshops.

Relationship-building is so special. Our students are not just participants of a program when they walk through our doors. We love when our staff and volunteers really get to know our students—the families they cherish, the work they dedicate themselves to, the personal goals they strive for, the struggles they've overcome, the challenges they still face. Each individual is so uniquely made, and it's an honor to walk alongside them.

There are so many parts that make what we do possible… to start: our hardworking staff, our dedicated volunteer teachers, the generosity of our amazing supporters, and the welcoming hearts of those that host our in-person classes.

The heart of our mission makes it all worth it: striving to give our immigrant students a safe, encouraging place of learning English with confidence, and extending the love and good news of God to them.

So of course it makes us SO glad when we hear our students tell us how they were able to use their English at work to communicate with clients, keep up with their children and their schoolwork, and speak independently to their doctors!

Every day of class, all students and teachers from the site take a short break to gather in one room, hear announcements, and listen to an encouraging message. ¿Sabías que ofrecemos un Programa para Niños (5-12 años de edad) para los hijos de nuestros estudiantes en East Harlem?

Nuestros estudiantes no tienen que escoger entre tomar clases de inglés o cuidar a sus hijos — en nuestra sede de East Harlem los LUNES, pueden aprender inglés mientras sus niños disfrutan de una clase programada con historias bíblicas, canciones y manualidades.

Did you know we offer a Children’s Program (aged 5-12) for the children of our students in East Harlem? Our students don’t have to choose between English classes or taking care of their kids — at our East Harlem site on MONDAYS, students can learn English while their kids enjoy a programmed lesson with Bible stories, song, and crafts!
