Ruben immigrated as a child from Spain and is now giving back to his community by volunteering as an ESL teacher at The Open Door. He deep compassion led him to volunteer at BOTH of our NYC sites—East Harlem and Upper West Side.

Ruben builds community and friendships because he knows how lonely it can feel to immigrate to NYC. He shares: "In [Spanish-speaking] countries, you sit outside your porch, and you talk to your neighbor, your mailman, the milkman. In New York, you’re stuck in the apartment and I think it’s really lonely. But in here [at The Open Door], it’s a community."

Even outside of the classroom, Alissa checks in on her students, offering reassurance and steady care. THIS is the heart of The Open Door. 💚

It's officially that time of year... Christmas Conversation Partners is starting THIS WEEK!! 🎄🗣️ Volunteers & students both welcome! Sign up for as many nights as you'd like!

As a volunteer, you'll help our immigrant ESL students practice their English conversation in pairs or small groups and help them gain confidence in speaking!
