Pancreatic and Gastric Cancers affect the gastro-intestinal (GI) system. In addition to the Pancreas and Stomach, the GI system also includes the Liver, Small and Large Bowel, and Re**um.

Compared to other cancers, gastro-intestinal cancers have the highest rates of new diagnoses and account for 1 out of 4 cancer related deaths. GI cancers are a particular concern for individuals who identify as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI). Despite relatively low cancer mortality overall, AAPI individuals diagnosed with liver or stomach cancer are 40-50% more likely to die from these cancers than white patients.

We recently had the opportunity to speak at the Viral Hepatitis Initiative Briefing sponsored by Council Member and Health Committee Chair, Lynn Schulman. The briefing provided a comprehensive overview of the ongoing impact of Hepatitis B and C on New Yorkers with surveillance data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as well as firsthand accounts from patients, navigators, and healthcare providers like CBWCHC’s very own Director of the Hepatitis B Program, Julie Yoshimachi, DNP. Together, we examined ways through which the City Council can continue to advance efforts toward the elimination of viral hepatitis in NYC by 2030.
