Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed annually on the third Monday in January, honors the Reverend Dr. King’s inspirational life and legacy of civil rights activism.

It is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, a “Day On, Not a Day Off,” when Americans are encouraged to volunteer and strengthen their communities. How will you give back this year? COMMENT your plans!

As the final candle of the Kinara (a seven-branched candle holder) is lit, those who celebrate this holiday reflect on all the principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Tonight, the first candle is lit beginning celebrations around the world to commemorate the rededication of the Jewish temple in 2nd century BCE Jerusalem. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah celebrates the miracle of a small amount of oil lasting 8 days instead of just one.

For all those taking part in the festivities, may you embrace the miracles, traditions and togetherness that make this holiday special. How do you plan to celebrate?
