The complex topic of Medical Aid in Dying was deeply explored throughout the day from the medical, legal, care and personal family experiences. A big shout out to ALCA’s own past president Debra Feldman for sharing her very inspiring deeply personal story. What a privilege to be part of such a beautiful and meaningful gathering hosted by the National Aging in Place Council of New York at Inspir Senior Living.

Author and advocate Mary Lou Falcone spoke deeply from the heart about her journey as a wife, friend, and caregiver to her late husband, the artist and musician Nicky Zann. A true renaissance woman — operatic singer, classical music publicist, and strategist — Mary Lou shared powerful lessons and heartfelt caregiving insights in a moving presentation filled with humanistic pearls of wisdom.

Her book, “I Didn’t See It Coming,” is a must-read for families navigating the caregiving journey for a loved one with dementia.

We were treated to an inspiring talk by Matthew Goerke, one of America’s leading experts in Memory Development, at the recent Orion Resource Group meeting. He showed us how simple techniques can boost memory and recall — and by the end, everyone could remember the fifteen words we’d forgotten at the start!

One great takeaway: When meeting someone new —
1. Slow down, focus, and really listen to their name.
2. Repeat it often & naturally in conversation: “Where did you grow up, Sam?” “Sam, I noticed that…”
