Faeza Ashraf captures the persistent struggle of a refugee and his daughter to survive in a world where they are exiled from their own home. Her poem's title, "Their Joined Palms," is derived from the refugee and daughter touching the opposite sides of the same wall. While the wall signifies distance, unbeknownst to them, it also forms a physical connection between the daughter and her father. http://mymonline.org/their-joined-palms/

He’s a forgotten man, in tattered clothes, searching for his home. High piles of trash line the road he walks. His gaze shifts uneasily. This isn’t the country he remembers. She’s a young girl, weaving through the crowded street, unnoticed. Eying the heavy pockets of some, her hand slips in and out,...

Check out "Of Masks," a poignant poem by our very own Omar Shareef! He uses evocative imagery to explore how we hide our true "self" in a society obsessed with celebrating appearances and rewarding outer masks over honesty. http://mymonline.org/of-masks/

Over a year ago, the MHPS Service Committee debuted with its very first interdisciplinary health screen at Jamaica Muslim Center. Nearly a year and 6 screens later, we returned to where it all started, bringing together students and professionals from various health disciplines to serve the health needs of the local community. A huge thanks to staff at JMC for hosting us yet again as well as to all our dedicated volunteers! Stay tuned for more service events coming to a venue near you!

Salaam everyone,

Service Committee here and we hope your year has been off to a great start! Nearly one year ago, the Service Committee debuted with its first interdisciplinary health screen consisting of medical, dental, podiatry and optometry screening services in order to heighten health maintenance awareness and education within our local communities as well as to bring healthcare to those that need it most. Befittingly, after a year of 6 screens at various locations across NYC and hundreds of patients screened, we’re coming full circle and returning to where it all started- right at JMC! Our next screen is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th @ Jamaica Muslim Center, and is set to run from 4 to 9 PM. Sign up is live, so if you're interested in getting involved, please click the link below!

Join us in bringing interdisciplinary healthcare to those most vulnerable and heightening health education and awareness in our communities. Stay tuned here for future screen dates and locations coming to a community near you!

MHPS Collaborative, a 501c3 non profit, was founded after the murders of Deah, Yusor, and Razan left our communities, specifically, our Muslim health professions community, with few places to turn, little time to make sense of it all, and mourn. However, it was also founded to honor their legacy of continuous & local charity, and by doing so, facilitate friendships across our schools that would have otherwise not occurred. We stand today with that same solidarity for the LGBTQ community in Orlando, who are mourning and also trying to make sense of it all. This Ramadan, please remember today's victims in your prayers.
