"Anima," the title of our current career-spanning exhibition of Felipe Baeza, refers to the soul of a person or being, and is a nod to the earliest work included in the exhibition.

The exhibition includes work from important series like Gente del Occidente de Mexico (2017/2019), in which the artist combines cut images of Mesoamerican ceramics with contemporary erotica; Los Otros (2017–ongoing), consisting of both printed images and collagraph matrices depicting men in various states of pleasure and connection; Unruly Forms (2022–23), where various layers of inked paper are cut and assembled on panel, reanimating the spirits of Mesoamerican vessels and artifacts; and Sonder (2024–ongoing), a newer body of work incorporating the eyes of artists and intellectuals that inspire Baeza, including James Baldwin, José Esteban Muñoz, and Sylvia Rivera, among others.

Exciting news to share! Following a decade of transformative leadership, Executive Director Judy Hecker will step down from her role in June and become Executive Director Emerita, allowing her to focus on university teaching, writing, and other activities in the print field. Judy concludes a successful 10-year tenure, during which she led ambitious programmatic growth, a four-fold revenue increase and a move to West 24th Street that dramatically grew Print Center’s footprint, impact and audience.

“It has been an absolute privilege to lead Print Center and to see my goals for expanding the space and building more community for art and prints become a reality,” said Judy. “I am grateful to have collaborated with some of the most talented and inspiring creative people in this field. I especially thank our dedicated and accomplished Board of Trustees, donors, and staff. Together, we have enhanced the vibrant ecosystem of printmaking. Print Center holds a special place in my heart and I’m excited to serve as an active ambassador for the organization as Executive Director Emerita.”

Visit Judy and Print Center this winter to congratulate her on a job well done!

We are one week away from the opening of Felipe Baeza: Anima at Print Center New York!

Baeza’s work combines diverse media, including pigments, tissue paper, archival images, gesso, and varnish, as well as intensive aesthetic processes, such as drawing, cutting, surface abrasion, and absorption. The artist manipulates materials on paper at both intimate and large scales.

The exhibition’s title refers to the soul of a person or being, and is a nod to the earliest work included in the exhibition. One of Baeza’s first explorations of cut paper and collage, “Anima,” 2011, foreshadows his material experimentation of later years as well as his conceptual exploration of the degendered and reassembled human body.

Join us at Print Center New York for the opening reception of this much-anticipated exhibition on February 5 at 6pm!

Today we’re featuring New Voices artist Edwige Charlot. Edwige is an artist printmaker of Haitian ancestry who blends printmaking, collage, and installation to map the matrix and create works exploring the ecology of Creolization and Q***r Afro-Latinx identities.

As curator Alana Hernandez writes: “Charlot digitally prints, layers, repeats, and transforms aspects of the natural world on the translucent organza and viola. These layers of fabric suspended in space weave together ancestral memory, diasporic movement, and futuristic visions.”

Learn more at our upcoming artist talk & coffee hour with Edwige Charlot and Kyle b.co. Saturday, August 2, 2–4pm.

New Voices: On Futurity is on view June 5–August 30, 2025.

Today we’re featuring New Voices artist Sergio Suárez! .suarez Sergio is a Mexican-born, Atlanta-based artist and printmaker whose practice is informed by baroque intricacy, theological iconography, and traces of Mesoamerican material cultures.

Curator Alana Hernandez writes “Concepts of futurity can be explored through the metaphor of portals… Sergio Suárez’s deeply immersive work offers such possibilities through a printmaking and sculptural practice that implies access to radial imaginings and emergent worlds shaped… by speculative timelines and cosmologies.”

Hear more about Sergio’s work at our artist talk tonight 6-7:30pm!

New Voices: On Futurity is on view June 5–August 30, 2025.
