As the weather shifts from crisp fall days to colder winter temps, your pet’s skin can start to feel the change too. Dry indoor air and chilly winds can lead to itching, flaking, and dull coats, especially in senior pets or those with sensitive skin.

A few ways to help:
💧 Keep up with regular grooming to remove loose fur and dander
🛁 Use vet-approved moisturizing shampoos or sprays
🏠 Run a humidifier to add moisture back into the air
🥩 Feed a balanced diet rich in omega fatty acids for skin support

Healthy skin means a comfortable, happy pet, no matter how cold it gets outside.

Thanksgiving Pet Safety Alert 🚨🦃

Every year, emergency vets see a major spike in poisonings from pets sneaking Thanksgiving scraps. Cats and dogs may beg for a bite, but what seems harmless to us can be deadly to them.

________________

🚫 Dangerous Thanksgiving Foods for Pets:

🦴 Turkey skin & bones → Pancreatitis, choking risk
🧄 Garlic & onions (in casseroles/stuffing) → Destroys red blood cells
🍇 Grapes, raisins, cranberry walnut salad → Kidney failure
🥧 Pumpkin pie (nutmeg) & chocolate desserts → Seizures, toxicity
🍞 Stuffing (sage & herbs) → Neurological issues
🥛 Dairy-heavy dishes & whipped cream → GI upset, dehydration

________________

🐱 Cats are up to 10x more sensitive to toxins than dogs and even a small amount can send your pet to the ER.

One emergency visit could cost $6,000... or worse, the priceless loss of your pet.

Keep them safe:

✅ Offer pet-safe treats only
✅ Keep leftovers and trash sealed
✅ Ask guests not to feed your pets
✅ Call your vet immediately if your pet shows any signs of distress

Your pets don’t need a Thanksgiving plate. They just need you to keep them safe.

If your pet gets anxious before a vet visit, a little preparation at home can help. Keep the carrier out where they can explore it, reward them for going inside, and make it a positive space, not just for vet days.

Over time, these small steps help your pet feel calmer, safer, and more confident on their next visit.

Have questions about reducing stress for your cat or dog? Call us at 718-621-1629 or visit www.sfahnyc.com, we’re here to help.

🌟 Team Member Spotlight: Christine Vermilyea, Practice Manager 🌟

We may have missed Veterinary Practice Manager Week last week… but in true Christine fashion, that’s probably because she was too busy keeping everything running smoothly to remind us!

Christine has been with St.Francis Animal Hospital Brooklyn since 2006 and is truly the heart and soul of our practice. From staffing and ordering supplies to fixing lab equipment, managing the website, and making sure both our patients and team are well cared for - she does it all, and somehow makes it look effortless!

With over 40 years in the veterinary field, Christine has done just about everything: assistant, receptionist, technician, and now the ultimate “Mom” of the office. 🐾✨

When she’s not managing our daily chaos, Christine loves spending time with her pets and her granddaughters, who keep her just as busy and full of joy. 💕

We couldn’t do what we do without her. Thank you, Christine, for your dedication, heart, and endless care that keeps St.Francis running strong every single day!

Your cat’s litter box habits can tell you a lot about their health. Small changes are easy to overlook, but sometimes, they’re the first sign something’s wrong.

Here’s what to watch for:
🚩 Going outside the box or visiting it more often
🚩 Straining or crying while urinating
🚩 Blood in the urine or stool
🚩 Sudden changes in the amount of clumps or waste

These signs can point to urinary issues, constipation, or even stress-related problems. Catching them early can make all the difference for your cat’s comfort and health.
