Not all stomachaches are the same — watch how the child responds
Two kids can both say “my stomach hurts.”
One curls up quietly.
Another paces and can’t sit still.
Another screams and won’t be touched.
Same complaint.
Completely different picture.
What to look for (beyond the pain)
Instead of asking “how bad is it,” watch:
• do they curl up or stretch out?
• do they want pressure or avoid touch?
• are they still or restless?
• do they want you near—or not at all?
• are they thirsty, nauseous, gassy?
• did it start after food, stress, or suddenly?
These details matter more than the word “stomachache.”
Common patterns (and what they point toward):
1. Bending double, pressing hard into the belly
Child curls up, pushes into abdomen, may cry with pain but gets relief from pressure.
Look for: • better from pressure
• pain in waves (cramping)
• folding forward helps
👉 Colocynthis
This is one of the clearest patterns.
Pressure = relief.
2. Irritable, tense, wants to be left alone
Child is snappy, sensitive, doesn’t want to be touched or talked to.
Look for: • worse after eating, stress, or too much stimulation
• cramping, nausea, urge but not much relief
• chilly, wants warmth
👉 Nux vomica
This is the “overloaded system” picture.
3. Restless, anxious, can’t get comfortable
Child keeps moving, changing positions, may seem worried or unsettled.
Look for: • pacing or shifting constantly
• small sips of water
• looks tired but can’t settle
👉 Arsenicum album
Pain + anxiety + restlessness.
4. Clingy, weepy, wants comfort
Child wants to be held, cries easily, feels better with attention.
Look for: • better with comfort
• not very thirsty
• may follow rich or heavy food
👉 Pulsatilla
Soft, dependent, changeable.
5. Angry, inconsolable, pain feels unbearable
Child screams, cries, pushes away then demands attention again.
Look for: • pain seems out of proportion
• wants to be carried or rocked
• very reactive to discomfort
👉 Chamomilla
This is the “I cannot tolerate this” picture.
6. Better lying completely still, worse from movement
Child avoids moving, may lie flat and resist being repositioned.
Look for: • any movement worsens pain
• dryness, thirst for larger drinks
• prefers to be left alone
👉 Bryonia
Stillness = relief.
7. Bloating, gas, distention — especially later in the day
Child looks uncomfortable from fullness more than sharp pain.
Look for: • visible bloating
• worse afternoon/evening
• gassy, slow digestion
👉 Lycopodium
More about pressure from within than cramping.
Instead of asking:
“What kind of stomachache is this?”
Ask:
👉 “What is the body doing with the pain?”

What to do
• Match the behavior pattern
• Choose one remedy
• Give one dose
• Watch for:
→ relaxation
→ less intensity
→ more comfort
That’s often your first sign you’re on the right track.
One important note!
If there is:
• persistent vomiting
• signs of dehydration
• severe or worsening pain
• pain with high fever
That’s not a wait-and-see situation. Seek medical care.
