🔑 If you’ve been struggling with chronic back pain, this is important to hear:

⭐️ It’s not your fault.
(Let that sink in)

❤️‍🩹 Anger, frustration, anxiety…even depression are common feelings that many go through when struggling with back pain.

🩻 No matter the “reason” you have been told why you’re in pain the fact is, it downright sucks.

💊 So you try everything.
🔪 When everything doesn’t work, the options do not get better with many being told that surgery is the only way to fix your problem.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Clinicians and clients I work with still struggle with this concept (I still do too!) but rather than accepting that pain is a complex human experience we are still trying to water it down the best exercises, simple fixes, and root causes.

All which do not currently exist.

👂 We hear that everyday and it makes so much sense. So let’s try to think of it a different way.

❤️‍🩹 A lot of us in pain are fearful of making injuries worse. So we rest, we get massages, we heat/ice and use whatever fancy gadget on the market to “feel better”.

🏋🏻‍♂️ The problem is tissue requires load for optimal healing. Our nervous system requires stress for adaptation - so while feeling better and more comfortable is important - unless we pair those tools with EFFORT, LOAD, SWEAT and…maybe some TEARS we are missing a huge part of the rehab process.

🧱 Is there a time when adding more load is not the answer?

💎 Yes.

🏃🏻‍♂️ For this client with acute onset pain following a run, swelling and the big key crepitus with movement and palpation adding more load was NOT going to be a good answer.

🫣 Diagnosis is usually not a high priority on my list to “figure out” as a PT, especially in one session - but tissue/person behavior and responsiveness is and I think tells us a lot more on how to treat people.
