Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is one of the most common complications I have seen from patients after cosmetic treatments were performed by another physician without proper consideration for skin tone.
Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III and above are more prone to developing hyperpigmentation if lasers, energy devices, or peels are used with the wrong settings or the wrong technology. When treatments are performed in an inappropriate setting or without proper expertise, the skin can respond with excess pigment production instead of improvement.
The good news: PIH is often preventable. With the right laser choice, conservative settings, and proper skin preparation, we can safely treat darker skin tones while minimizing risk.
When PIH does occur, a combination approach works best. Treatment options may include:
• Medical-grade topical therapy such as retinoic acid, kojic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, and tranexamic acid
• Targeted laser therapy such as Pico laser technology to help break down excess pigment
• A customized regimen designed specifically for your skin type
Treating hyperpigmentation in skin of color requires experience, precision, and the right technology. If you’re considering a cosmetic treatment and have medium to darker skin tones, make sure you’re treated by someone who understands how to treat your skin safely.
