HJTEP - The Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program

HJTEP - The Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program is a Tennis, Education, Life-skill and Wellness Program for

Since 1972, our renowned youth tennis program has offered urban youngsters the chance to learn an unfamiliar sport and sharpen their skills on and off the courts. Participants transition from the Grassroots and Munchkin levels to the Tournament Level. Our top-level players are selected to participate on the Jack Shapiro Team. Admission to the HJTEP programs is on a first-come basis with preference given to returning students and Central Harlem residents. While learning tennis, our players are hitting the books as well as the courts. We urge them to do all they can academically, to complete high school and to enroll in college. A 2.0 GPA is required in our program, but our participants average a 3.1 GPA. Our Tennis Against Obesity (TAO) program is designed to help schools, students and parents recognize, address and combat a growing obesity epidemic. TAO has four keystones: fitness, nutrition, discipline and fun.

Our West Harlem Winter Clinic on Martin Luther King Jr. Day was our biggest and best turnout yet, and we’re still buzzing from the energy. Thank you to everyone who showed up, showed out, and made the day so special.

Huge shoutout to our incredible coaches, staff, and student-athletes who jumped in to teach, lead, and support the kids of our community through tennis drills, fitness, tips, and plenty of fun. This is what learning through play and service looks like.

We’re also grateful to for stopping by, supporting the clinic, and addressing our families and students on the importance of Dr. King’s legacy and community leadership.

Days like this remind us why we do this work. Thank you, West Harlem. We can’t wait for the next one. 💚

We were honored to welcome Assemblyman to our Winter Clinic on MLK Jr. Day. From reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy to sharing his own journey as a former HJTEP student-athlete, Jordan reminded our kids what it looks like to lead with purpose, service, and heart. Thank you for continuing to pour into this program and for the tireless work you do for our Harlem community. Legacy in motion. 🎾✊🏽

Happy Friday! 💛

Our youngest crew brings the sweetest energy and the biggest hearts. Grassroots 1 is learning the basics of tennis technique and movement one wiggle, one bounce, and one deep breath at a time, thanks to the endless patience and love of our amazing coaches. Curious, determined, and already showing up like champs.

Still buzzing from such a fun and educational week! Our kids had an incredible time learning about Hall of Famers and in the classroom and then bringing that inspiration onto the court. Watching them soak up the history, values, and competitive spirit of two legends was truly special.

Huge thank you to Tracy, Gigi, and the for pouring into our student athletes and creating a day they’ll never forget. We’re grateful for every moment of this partnership and the impact it has on our young players. 💛🎾
