Vulvar dermatoses remain underdiagnosed and undertreated in women with skin of color, often due to cultural stigma, structural and educational barriers, and gaps in clinical training. Many patients delay care, self-manage symptoms, or face challenges having the severity and quality-of-life impact of their disease fully recognized once they do seek help.

A poster presented at Skin of Color Update explores these barriers—including the role of shame—and calls for a paradigm shift in how dermatology clinicians approach vulvar health in historically marginalized populations. Equitable, culturally informed care is essential to improving outcomes and quality of life.

Hair loss treatments are more in demand than ever—but access still isn’t equal.

Despite the significant quality-of-life impact of alopecia, insurance companies often label hair loss therapies as “cosmetic,” creating major barriers for patients, especially those from underserved communities.

A recent JDD - JDDonline.com editorial examines how the top five U.S. insurers cover hair loss treatments—and what dermatologists can do when coverage is denied. In a Next Steps in Derm commentary, author Dr. Kimberly Salkey offers practical tips to help patients navigate denials and gain access to care.

Hair loss can be deeply personal—especially for women who wear head coverings.

A poster presented at Skin of Color Update highlights how alopecia in head-covering women carries unique emotional, cultural, and spiritual impacts that are often overlooked. From concerns over modesty when treated by male clinicians to discomfort during clinical photography, these patients face real barriers to care.

Understanding these lived experiences—and adopting culturally sensitive practices—can help dermatology clinicians build trust and deliver more compassionate, inclusive alopecia care.

She also breaks down practical strategies for recognizing CSU and when to escalate care, including the role of newly approved remibrutinib.

Pincer nail deformity is a painful condition where excessive nail curvature compresses surrounding tissue—most commonly the great toe and often in older adults. While traditional treatments like nail braces or surgical removal can help, they don’t always deliver lasting or cosmetically satisfying results.

Hair loss patients are increasingly arriving to dermatology appointments with trichoscopic images captured at head spas—a rapidly growing trend across the U.S. These spas offer scalp treatments, consultations with trichology professionals, and imaging that patients often hope will guide their diagnosis.

But how accurate are these evaluations? And how should dermatologists approach patients who bring in these images?

In this Next Steps in Derm commentary, the author of a recent JDD - JDDonline.com study on the topic explores whether head spas are helpful in caring for hair and scalp disorders—or whether they introduce new challenges. Learn about the quality of trichoscopic images, how to counsel patients, and what this trend could mean for the future of hair and scalp care.
