Self-talk can be the surface. The deeper driver is often a core belief about you, other people, or the world.

Try this: when a situation hits, name the story your mind is selling. Then ask, is this a fact or a learned belief? Beliefs look for proof and ignore what does not fit.

The same feedback can feel like failure or growth, depending on the filter.

Power in relationships isn’t about control—it’s about awareness.

Valerie Kowalski LMSW explores how subtle dynamics like power imbalances, control, and communication patterns can shape the health of our relationships in ways we don’t always recognize. When one person holds more power, it can create cycles that are difficult to break—and even harder to name.

Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, shared power, and emotional safety.

Mood swings, tearfulness, and anxiety can show up after birth. The baby blues are common and often ease in about 10 days.

Postpartum depression can feel heavier and last longer. It may include persistent low mood or loss of interest, sleep and appetite changes, fatigue, guilt, social withdrawal, trouble bonding, severe anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.

If you fear harming yourself or your baby, call 911 or 988, or go to the ER.

Abuse often shows up as a slow build, not one dramatic moment.

Tension can feel like walking on eggshells. Then comes an incident: threats, shaming, assault, coercion, or breaking things. After that, reconciliation can include apologies and promises that it will never happen again.

Love is not fear, isolation, humiliation, or being controlled. If any of this feels familiar, it matters.

Debt is not only math. It is emotion, memory, and pressure.

When money feels tight, your mind can go to fear, guilt, and low self-esteem. For some people, it connects back to early messages like “we don’t have the money,” and that worry can spill into everyday choices.

Start by naming what you feel. Stress, shame, or anxiety. Naming it helps you respond instead of spiral.

Anorexia nervosa is often described as a “perfect storm” of risk factors, not a single cause.

It can include strict control of intake, safe foods, and foods that feel off-limits. For some people, it also shows up with over-exercising.

There is also a binge and purge subtype, where episodes of extreme eating are followed by vomiting, laxatives, or diuretics. Understanding the pattern is a key step toward treatment options.

Stigma can sound like "Asking for help is weakness". It is a social belief, not a fact.

If you grew up where emotions were frowned on, reaching out can feel risky. But emotions are universal, and vulnerability can be a sign of strength.

Getting clear on what stigma is, and how it shapes your doubts, is a real first step toward support.

ADHD can show up differently in adolescence than you might expect. Some teens look more like “daydreamers” who struggle with organization, follow-through, and paying attention when spoken to.

Others look more like “fidgeters,” with impulsive choices, interrupting, and constant movement that can feel like ants in their pants.

Because the inattentive type can read as quiet or “in their own world,” it can be missed. Early identification helps build healthy coping skills before unhelpful patterns stick.
