With regret, I inform you of the passing of Florence "Dolly" Hagan.
(Family written obituary) Florence Hofer Hagan, lovingly known to everyone as “Dolly”, passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve, 2025. At 84 years old she was still very much at the center of her family’s orbit- a role she cherished every day of her life.
Born January 11, 1941, in Bayside, Queens, to Martha Hofer and Thomas Lang, Dolly grew up one of six siblings: Thomas ("Brother"), Martha ("Sissy"), Emma ("Tootsie"), Jeannie, and Maureen. They stayed close through every phase of life, rarely missing each other's milestones or their children's or grandchildren's. She always said she couldn't imagine a better time to have grown up, and she carried that warmth into the family she built.
She married Francis “Frank” Hagan on May 5, 1962, and together they made their home in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx. In a small apartment that somehow always felt big enough, they raised four sons, Frank, Michael, Sean, and Joseph. It became the setting for decades of birthdays, holidays, and the steady coming and going of family and friends, where bagpipes were simply part of the background noise. Her mother-in-law, Catherine “Cassie” Hagan, whom she looked up to and regarded dearly, lived upstairs for a time and was an integral part of the family. It was home in the truest sense and remained hers for the rest of her life.
Dolly worked as a school matron at St. Barnabas High School and was later inducted into its Inaugural Hall of Fame Class. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Barnabas Church, and she showed her faith quietly and steadfastly through how she lived.
She was not a quiet observer. Dolly ran commentary on everything with sharp, quick humor and noticed it all. She remembered every birthday, every milestone, every detail. That same attentiveness came with an unwavering optimism. She led with hope, even when she didn’t have to. Summers meant the Jersey Shore- rented houses in Belmar with her family for decades, forging traditions that carried forward into the next generations, and later, trips to Lake George with her siblings, nieces, and nephews.
She was at the helm of Christmas for years, famously so, and she left everyone with a deep love for the holidays. Her door was always open. Big gatherings happened for birthdays, holidays, grandkids' milestones- any excuse to get everyone together. She ordered thoughtful, personalized gifts from catalogs until the very end, including her own grandma “merch” because she was proud of the title and not shy about it. She welcomed every new person who entered the family as if they had always belonged.
She is survived by her four sons: Francis Jr. (Halina), Michael (Nadia), Sean (Eileen), and Joseph (Margherita); her 16 grandchildren: Cathy, Nicole, Shannon (Chris), Michael, Thomas, Casey, Michelle, Frankie, Brianna, Joey, Erin, Sean, Tara, Lily, Madeline, and Emma; and her two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Declan, children of Shannon and Chris Beihl. She is also survived by her sisters Jean and Tootsie and an extended family that could fill a small church—which it will.
Above all, Dolly leaves behind a legacy of closeness. She was deeply proud of her family and made sure everyone knew it, publicly and privately, never missing a chance to say it or show it, and maintaining deep, personal relationships with each of the people she loved and who loved her in return.
