Hispanic Heritage Month Feature | Awilda Rosa, Receptionist

In 2017, Awilda was encouraged by a friend to explore Exponents, and from that moment, her life changed forever. She quickly found a welcoming home within the supportive environment created by the staff, managers, and peers, whose positive attitudes and dynamic personalities made a lasting impression on her.
After graduating from ARRIVE Cycle 150, she transitioned into community outreach as a Peer and now serves as a receptionist, where her dedication and joyful spirit illuminate the experience of everyone who steps off the elevator.

Awilda holds a deep appreciation for her heritage, thanks to the teachings of her mother. In her own words, “Puertorriqueña pa que tu te sepa!” “I love Exponents and everything it represents,” she shares. “It has empowered me to help myself. It is a space for everyone, where all are welcome. If you are seeking help, I encourage you to visit Exponents and, once you receive help, remember to pay it forward.”

Erasmo, a Harm Reduction Peer Specialist at Exponents, embodies resilience and determination. Since joining Exponents in July 2024, he has leveraged training from the Center for Personal & Professional Development to fuel his passion for supporting individuals struggling with substance use.

Erasmo credits Training Center Director Tawana Rowser-Brown, Ph.D, Recovery Coach trainer Chuck Norris, and the Wellness team, including Juan Jordan and Shayra Vega, for empowering him with invaluable lessons during his CRPA internship.

As a Latino man, Erasmo takes pride in transcending past challenges, using them as catalysts for growth. He effectively utilizes his CRPA-Provisional certification to engage with individuals experiencing homelessness and substance use. Erasmo is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Social Work at New York University, further solidifying his commitment to creating positive change.

Erasmo currently serves as one of Exponents’ Harm Reduction Peer Specialist. He came to Exponents a little over a year ago, in July of 2024 to access training in our Center for Personal & Professional Development. He credits Training Center Director, Tawana Rowser-Brown, Ph.D and Recovery Coach trainer, Chuck Norris, for transferring their passion for assisting Persons Who Use Drugs to him. He also credits Juan Jordan, Shayra Vega and the entire Wellness team for all the lessons taught to him during his CRPA internship.

As a man of Latino descent, he is most proud of the fact that, while he has made his share of poor choices, he doesn’t let them define him or prevent him pursuing a better life.
Erasmo received his CRPA-Provisional which he puts to use regularly in his engagement with PWUD also experiencing homelessness.  He is also currently pursuing his Bachelor of Social Work at New York University.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for reflection—a chance to think about where we come from, how our cultural experiences shape us, and how we move through the world. I’ve always been deeply connected to my identity as a Latino and born in Puerto Rico, but I’m also so much more than that. I’m a man, who struggle with addiction for so many years and now I am a person in a long term recovery. I wanted to be the one to work hard to help make a difference in people’s access to recovery, especially for those who cannot afford it and and struggling with the languages. Exponents open the doors for those seeking recovery. As a professional working in the field for over 29 yrs., has influenced who I am today and being bilingual has truly shaped my perspective. This connection to culture is significant at all levels in our organization. It is important to look toward the future, as representation opens the door to possibilities and change. Juan Jordan
