Finding the Right Treatment for Your Sleep Apnea

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing while you sleep. It's caused by an upper-airway blockage in either your nose, throat, or mouth. When one of these is blocked, sleep apnea occurs during sleep.

You may not notice this, but often a spouse or loved one is the first one to point out the problem. If you wake up frequently, wake up with headaches, or are tired during the day, you should talk to your doctor about sleep apnea.

What is the best treatment for you?

There are a number of treatments for sleep apnea. The best one for you will depend on many things. If you have a mild case of sleep apnea, some simple lifestyle changes could make a huge difference. Your doctor's recommendations may include getting more exercise and losing weight or changing your sleeping position. Smoking also irritates your upper airway, and your doctor will recommend that you quit smoking.

One of the most popular treatments for sleep apnea is the CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. A CPAP machine works by supplying pressurized air to a breathing mask worn by the patient. The pressurized air flows into the throat and keeps your airway from collapsing. CPAP therapy is very effective, but some patients find the mask uncomfortable and the machine requires regular cleaning and maintenance.

Another treatment choice for sleep apnea is an oral appliance. You wear an oral appliance while you sleep and it works just like a mouthguard or orthodontic device. It keeps your jaw in a slightly forward position which is just enough to keep the airway open. Oral appliances are popular because some patients find them more comfortable than the CPAP mask. They are also easy to clean and portable.
