Happy Holidays and a Happy and Healthy New Year

As we welcome 2026, all of us at American Friends of Rabin Medical Center (AFRMC) want to extend our deepest gratitude for your steadfast support. Your generosity has strengthened Israel’s Rabin Medical Center through its most challenging moments and continues to make a profound impact on the lives of Israelis.

This year, the needs remain great. The last living hostages have returned home and face years of healing. More than 20,000 wounded Israeli soldiers require ongoing rehabilitative care. Rabin Medical Center is committed to their recovery.

To meet this urgent national need, the hospital is establishing a new Ambulatory Rehabilitation Center, a state-of-the-art facility offering personalized physical, cognitive, and emotional rehabilitation.

As we begin a new year of hope and renewal, we invite you to stand with us.
Please consider a New Year’s gift to support the Ambulatory Rehabilitation Center. No gift is too small, and every dollar brings wounded soldiers, civilians, and released hostages closer to healing.

Wishing you and your family a healthy and peaceful holiday.

Henry and Susan Samueli have donated $34 million to Israel’s Rabin Medical Center to establish the Samueli Cancer Pioneering Institute. With an additional $9 million from Clalit Health Services, this $34 million total is one of the largest and most impactful gifts in Israel’s history.

The donation will primarily fund innovative cancer research, with the goal of sharing discoveries with leading institutes around the world.

“We expect the Institute, under Dr. Markel’s leadership, to challenge existing care paradigms and create a better future for cancer patients inside of Israel and beyond.” — Henry & Susan Samueli

Cross-Border Organ Transplant Saves Life at Rabin Medical Center

In an extraordinary lifesaving effort, a compatible liver was flown overnight from Cyprus to Israel’s Rabin Medical Center for a 32-year-old woman suffering from severe liver cirrhosis.

Senior surgeons Dr. Aviad Gravetz and Dr. Fahim Kanani traveled to Nicosia to retrieve the organ, while Dr. Eviatar Nesher and Dr. Vladimir Tennak prepared for immediate surgery. Thanks to precise international coordination, the transplant was completed successfully, and the patient is now in stable, excellent condition.

The patient expressed her gratitude: “I owe my life to the incredible team that supported me throughout this journey.”

This remarkable achievement demonstrates Rabin Medical Center’s leadership in advanced organ transplantation.

A Released Hostage Returns to Rabin Medical Center for a Musical Performance

In a profoundly moving moment highlighting the resilience of the released hostages, Alon Ohel, who was treated at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center after surviving captivity, returned to the hospital to perform at its annual gala.

Standing beside the doctors who cared for him, including those who performed a complex eye surgery to repair injuries caused by a gr***de, Alon shared his heartfelt gratitude.

“Playing and performing in front of an audience is a moment of joy for me and a crucial part of my rehabilitation. I want to thank everyone involved. Taking the stage tonight is my victory.”

Alon’s courage is a testament to the human spirit, and to the lifesaving care provided at Rabin Medical Center.

Rabin Medical Center Performs 3rd Ever Small Intestinal Surgery in Israel

Rabin Medical Center has successfully performed one of the rarest surgeries in Israel—a small-intestine transplant, only the third ever done in the country.

The patient, a 36-year-old man who lived 17 years without a functioning digestive system and survived only through intravenous nutrition, can now look forward to eating normally again.

This life-changing procedure was made possible thanks to the extraordinary generosity of a family who chose to donate their 6-year-old child’s organs.

The transplant was led by Dr. Eviatar Nesher, Director of the Transplantation Department, together with a multidisciplinary surgical team.

Rabin Medical Center performs 70% of all organ transplants in Israel and remains the only hospital in the country to perform intestinal transplants.
A truly inspiring milestone in Israeli medicine, giving a patient the chance to reclaim his life.

Two Lives. One Diagnosis. A Remarkable Twist of Fate at Israel's Rabin Medical Center

Victor and Roni had never met, until their lives intersected in the most unexpected way.

Both men, from Eilat, were suddenly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. And in an extraordinary coincidence, they underwent surgery one after the other, in the same operating room at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center, treated by the same expert surgical team.

Victor arrived with jaundice caused by a pancreatic tumor and quickly underwent a robotic Whipple procedure, one of the most complex surgeries in modern medicine. A week later, Roni received the same diagnosis and was successfully treated by the very same team.

Both surgeries were successful. Today, Victor and Roni are recovering, two families connected by resilience, hope, and the extraordinary care at Rabin Medical Center
On behalf of American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, we wish Victor and Roni strength, healing, and a full recovery.

A New Treatment for Blood Cancer: Israeli Medical Breakthrough at Israel's Rabin Medical Center

Doctors at Rabin Medical Center have successfully deployed Israel’s first fully homegrown CAR-T therapy for multiple myeloma, a serious form of blood cancer. The first three patients have already been treated and safely discharged marking a historic milestone in Israeli medical innovation.

Developed at the Samueli Integrative Cancer Pioneering Institute within the Davidoff Cancer Center, this breakthrough offers real hope for patients who no longer respond to standard treatments.

Prof. Michal Besser and the research team are now preparing to expand CAR-T technology to additional cancers and even autoimmune diseases.

An International Chain of Life at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center

This week, a remarkable cross-border kidney exchange between Israel and Cyprus began in the operating room at Rabin Medical Center, a lifesaving chain linking three patients, three hospitals, and two countries.

It started with an altruistic donor who gave a kidney to a stranger. The kidney was transported to Jerusalem to save a patient whose wife could not donate due to incompatibility.

At the same time, a compatible kidney from Cyprus arrived at Rabin Medical Center and was successfully transplanted into another Israeli patient, all within hours.

This extraordinary collaboration was made possible by Rabin Medical Center’s transplant surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, laboratory teams, coordinators, and medical transporters working seamlessly together.

As Dr. Eviatar Nesher shared: “This international collaboration is proof that saving lives knows no borders.”

On behalf of American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, we are proud to support the hospital at the forefront of global, compassionate, and innovative medicine.

Historic Surgery Performed on Pregnant Woman: A Medical First at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center

For the first time in the world, doctors at Rabin Medical Center performed a life-saving bowel surgery on a pregnant woman without opening her abdomen — saving both mother and baby.

At 32 weeks pregnant, 23-year-old medical student Tzofia Libovitz arrived with severe abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a dangerous bowel perforation caused by Crohn’s disease. Normally, this requires open surgery and an emergency premature delivery.

But the Rabin Medical Center team, led by Dr. Ian White, made an extraordinary decision: Perform the surgery laparoscopically, preserving Tzofia’s pregnancy.

After several tense hours, the team succeeded. Tzofia recovered — and later delivered a healthy baby girl at 38 weeks.

On behalf of American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, we salute the hospital’s innovation, courage, and unwavering commitment to saving lives in Israel.

Released Hostage Returns to Israel's Rabin Medical Center for Complex Surgeries

Rabin Medical Center continues to care for released hostages, including Alon Ohel, who returned this week for intricate eye and shoulder surgeries following severe injuries sustained during his kidnapping in Gaza.

Dr. Irit Bahar, Head of Ophthalmology, and Dr. Assaf Dotan, Head of the Retina Unit, performed the delicate eye operation.

Dr. Bahar shared, “When we realized there might still be a chance to save his eye, it was a very emotional and hopeful moment.”

The hospital remains deeply committed to the long-term treatment and rehabilitation of all returning hostages, offering both expert medical care and compassionate support for their recovery.
